Responsibilities

SCOPE OF THE ROLE:

The EHS BU Lead is responsible for leading standards of environmental protection and health and safety within their Business Unit at both an organizational and individual employee level. Reporting to the Head of Health & Safety, the role supports a team of health and safety professionals including EHS Leads, EHS Advisors, and other members of the project-level EHS teams such as environmental engineers, nurses, paramedics, clerks, and possibly junior EHS staff or graduates.
The success of the EHS BU Lead lies in close liaison with the Operations Directors, Divisional Business Unit Managers, and Project Managers. Furthermore, process-based liaison with the BU Document Controllers, Procurement Managers, and Commercial & Estimation teams for critical processes such as process review & pre-construction is key.
This person will work to ensure that Mercury delivers standards of excellence through both proactive and reactive engagement, ensuring best-in-class delivery, including standards and expectations, and supporting the delivery of business unit-wide EHS campaigns, programs, and initiatives. Extensive travel to all operational sites across the relevant division and in all geographies is required. The ability to positively influence our site and BU leadership teams in the support of and drive for world-class EHS standards and behaviours is a key attribute.
The EHS BU Manager will be required to work hand in hand with our clients, ensuring that Mercury, Client, and industry best practices are implemented and maintained.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ROLE:

  • Provide ‘hands-on’ help, support, and assistance to all projects within remit, BU stakeholders, client representatives, and the supply chain.
  • Liaise with clients in a timely and professional manner, including responses to queries, promotion of best practices, closeout of incidents and NCRs, and participation in client-based campaigns and requests.
  • Ensure early engagement with all new projects to facilitate the success of project setup is of the highest standard.
  • Work closely with the PQQ/Procurement teams to ensure that all possible supply chain partners are adequately reviewed within a reasonable timeframe.
  • Develop and maintain strong networks throughout the business unit, communicating widely and appropriately to build a positive EHS culture.
  • Set Audit Targets, review adherence to set targets and the quality of the completed audits on a monthly basis.
  • Conduct regular reviews/spot checks of all open pending EHS issues in relation to critical open actions.
  • Formal auditing of projects regularly, at least quarterly, focusing on significant risks first and reporting findings to the Head of Health & Safety, Project Management, and BU Directors.
  • Review the BU analytics and trends at least monthly, identifying key risks and opportunities and deep diving the top 3 significant risks to drive key risk reduction strategies.
  • Validate the need for Alerts, Bulletins, and other communication content and approve those prepared by others, ensuring this communication is shared throughout the Business.
  • Work with the estimation & tender teams to ensure best-in-class tender packages are delivered on time and in full.
  • Drive and prepare the BU’s EHS Strategy on a quarterly basis, deliver the strategies to key BU Management & EHS teams.
  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities to eliminate recurrence, potential, or likelihood of risks, focussing on process & Design safety improvement planning.
  • Ensure that all incident reports, NCRs, SIPs, and action plans are reviewed, scrutinized, and vetted by the Head of Health & Safety prior to release.
  • Act as a ‘torchbearer’ for the ‘Safety Management System’ within their BU and use Lunch & Learns to cascade relevant SMS knowledge to new teams/staff.
  • Focus on new staff and ensure that a robust engagement program is followed for all new staff, ensuring that key knowledge is shared within adequate timelines.
  • Prepare, review, and approve the EHS monthly report for the BU and present it to the BU
  • Ensure Key Training Is completed with focus on project supervision, topic such as SVSM, MSP, Black Hat Training, ME minimum training requirements & statutory competencies are key.
  • Facilitate and assist all external audits conducted on the BU.
  • Ensure the sustainability & environmental processes are implemented, reviewed & monitored as required.
  • Drive the Small “E” to satisfy the industry & ME expectations.
  • Ensure a positive culture of consequence management is promulgated throughout the business.
  • Ensure that in addition to Mercury, Greater EU & client obligations are adhered to, geographical differences in terms of statutory requirements are adequately reviewed and effectively implemented, ensuring compliance at all times.
  • Review any frequent legislative changes with respect to EHS and ensure the business as well as projects are informed or aligned as required.
  • Promote Wellbeing and Occupational Health as part of the Bio-Psychosocial model.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA FOR THE ROLE:

  • Minimum 3 years in a similar BU/Lead/EHS Manager or similar role in a €200m+ turnover business, 8+ years EHS occupational experience in construction/engineering/petrochemical and/or within a multinational manufacturing or Pharma/Advanced Tech environment.
  • Minimum Diploma or Degree in Occupational H&S, Construction/trade/engineering background, and ideally some formal level of knowledge in environmental protection, e.g., IEMA or similar.
  • Accident Investigation, Negotiation & Influencing skills, Lifting/Crane Awareness, Live Energy Training, Temporary Works Awareness, Work at Height, and Plant Awareness training.
  • Experience in Microsoft packages, knowledge of EHS platforms such as DataScope, Hammertech, BIN 360, etc.
  • In-depth procedural knowledge in relation to report writing, RCA, action plans, Risk Analysis, etc.
  • Excellent administrative skills including but not limited to MS Word, Excel, PPT, Outlook, PDF, Flow charts, diagrams, basic schedule review, and generally technologically adept.
  • Experience in completing tenders.
  • Willing to travel.
  • Willing to go “above and beyond” when required by the business (within reason).
  • Experienced in working with a team of sub-ordinates, overseeing their progress, managing their conduct & promoting excellence within their team.
