HIRING SALARY RANGE: $88K -$119K per year (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant internal equity, and alignment with market data.

The work schedule for this role is Monday-Friday, 7:00am to 3:30pm, however, various hours may be required based on business demand.
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) / Compliance Manager to join our IFM team at our pharmaceutical R&D facility in La Jolla, California. The EHS / Compliance Manager will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of safety and compliance, with a specific focus on managing high-hazard work, including lockout/tagout (LOTO), working at heights, confined space entry, and electrical work. This position would report directly to our site Program Manager. This role requires a proactive leader with a strong aptitude for safety, excellent communication skills, and a customer-service-oriented mindset to ensure a safe and compliant work environment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in EHS management, with at least 3 years in a pharmaceutical, R&D, or similar high-hazard industrial environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of high-hazard work, including lockout/tagout, working at heights, confined space entry, and electrical safety.
  • Strong expertise in developing and implementing Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and compliance tracking systems.
  • Proven ability to manage incident investigations and CAPA plans.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, with a proactive and solutions-oriented mindset.
  • Familiarity with OSHA, Cal/OSHA, and other relevant safety regulations and standards.
  • Proficiency in managing safety metrics and leading indicator dashboards.
  • Certification such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional), CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist), or similar is preferred.
  • Must be able to work onsite Monday through Friday at our La Jolla, California facility.

SOME PHYSICAL/SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:

  • Regularly lift to 50 lbs
  • Regularly climb ladders, steps, and scaffolding
  • Repetitive motions: bend, stoop, squat, kneel, stretch, reach, wrist movement.
  • Walk extensively throughout the facility during shift
  • Work at an accelerated pace in emergency conditions
  • Wear steel toe safety shoes, safety glasses, gloves, hard hats, and other Personal Protective Equipment as needed.
  • Cope with demands (stressors) that are associated with the job and/or the work environment.
Responsibilities
  • High-Hazard Work Management:
  • Oversee and manage all high-hazard activities, including lockout/tagout, working at heights, confined space entry, and electrical work, ensuring compliance with OSHA, Cal/OSHA, and other relevant regulations.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) for high-hazard tasks to identify risks within a pharmaceutical R&D environment and implement effective controls.
  • Conduct regular spot checks and safety audits to ensure adherence to safety protocols for high-hazard work.
  • Compliance and Safety Program Management:
  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive EHS programs to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as industry best practices.
  • Manage the facility’s leading indicator dashboard, tracking key safety metrics and proactively addressing trends to prevent incidents.
  • Lead incident investigations, root cause analyses, and the development of Corrective Action Preventive Action (CAPA) plans to mitigate risks and prevent recurrence.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
  • Work closely with clients, facility teams, and stakeholders on safety-related initiatives, fostering a collaborative and safety-focused culture.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to internal and external stakeholders, addressing safety concerns promptly and effectively.
  • Communicate safety policies, procedures, and updates clearly and effectively to all levels of the organization.
  • Training and Development:
  • Develop and deliver training programs for employees and contractors on high-hazard work, safety protocols, and compliance requirements.
  • Ensure all personnel involved in high-hazard tasks are properly trained and certified as required.
  • Continuous Improvement:
  • Drive continuous improvement in safety performance through proactive risk assessments, program enhancements, and employee engagement.
  • Maintain a “can-do” attitude, working well under pressure to address urgent safety and compliance needs.
