Description FLSA: Non-Exempt Purpose of Classification: The purpose of this classification is to Essential Functions: The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. Ensures continuous flow of electric to customers at the appropriate voltage levels: responds to power outages throughout the City electrical system at all times. Installs, repairs, and maintains traffic lights, City street lights, yard lights, electrical power lines and equipment as member of a line crew: builds and maintains high voltage lines; utilizes bucket trucks; climbs poles; installs switches and regulators; re-conducts electrical lines; sets poles; installs primary and secondary lines, etc. Installs electrical systems and equipment, such as conduit for underground wiring, electrical power lines to new buildings, houses and other structures, switches and transformers, wires, meters, and meter boxes. Maintains and repairs substations: conducts status checks on substation equipment; reads amperage on substation breakers; logs information; resets phase flags; and reads meters for usage Troubleshoots electrical service and communications problems: performs voltage checks for customers; investigates and evaluates system control and data acquisition (SCADA), fiber, etc.; coordinates testing schedule for electric meters; assists meter readers with damaged meters; and assists with investigating power theft. Maintains lighting system for recreation fields, tennis courts, and basketball courts: replaces bulbs and lenses. Maintains rights of way and power lines; trims trees if they interfere with electrical lines; grinds brush; and drops lines for other tree trimmers as needed. Performs rough-in and final electrical inspections of work performed by electrical contractors to ensure compliance with established codes and ordinances. Participates in the on-call rotation schedule: works cut-on/cut-off list. Maintains instruments and controls at the Water Treatment, Wastewater plants, and for the Gas and Water systems: installs motors and motor controls. Assists in developing preventive maintenance program. Assists in training new employees in the performance of daily activities. Operates and utilizes various equipment, machinery and tools including bucket trucks, backhoes, tractors, bush hog, line truck, locators, various electrical tools and devices, etc. Maintains inventory of supplies and parts of bucket trucks: maintains records of tools and meters. Prepares and processes service requests, material requests, meter reports, inventory sheets, cut off cards, fuel records, work orders, vehicle maintenance reports, and leave slips. Additional Functions: Performs other related duties as required. Requirements Minimum Qualifications: High school Diploma or GED required, with vocational or technical training in electrical or a related field; supplemented by two years of experience in electrical line work; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s). Must possess and maintain the following additional certifications or licensures: Lineworker B and C; Advanced Meter Training; Highway Traffic Control for Work Zones; First Aid; and CPR. Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities: Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all City or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position. Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, fire, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, or rude/irate customers.
