Description

OUR MISSION:

ButterflyMX is on a mission to empower people to open and manage doors & gates from a smartphone. Our products are installed in more than 15,000+ multifamily, commercial, gated communities, and student-housing properties worldwide, including properties developed, owned, and managed by the most trusted names in real estate. Our features are designed for developers, owners, property managers, and tenants and our products lower operating costs and improve tenant satisfaction.

OUR CULTURE & VALUES:

Fantastic people are the key to our success. As a distributed, primarily remote workforce, we’re looking for more intelligent, passionate, collaborative, and down-to-earth individuals to join our growing team We’re driven by a shared commitment to excellence and innovation, grounded in our core values: We delight our customers, We take ownership, We are a community of collaborators, We speak up, We think big and do small, and We are tenacious.
We are looking for a stellar Electrical Engineer to design, develop and support the electronic aspects of our current and future hardware products. You will be working collaboratively as part of a high-performance hardware development team on-site at our Hardware Engineering lab in Southern California, providing knowledge, expertise and design engineering of electrical, electronic and communications solutions. This role will report to the SVP Hardware and be responsible for all electrical design, electronics development and communication aspects of our products.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Electrical, Electronics or Computer Engineering Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience
  • Fluent in Altium, OrCAD, or other schematic capture and PCB layout tools
  • Significant practical experience with microcontrollers, RS-485, I2C, SPI and other communication systems
  • Solid understanding of electronics engineering fundamentals
  • Insatiably curious
  • Fanatical about product design and all aspects of the creation of electronic products
  • Thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative product development environment with strong accountability and ownership
Responsibilities
  • Own the electrical design for all products, including circuit board layout, microcontroller selection, power supply design, and communication interfaces.
  • Develop and integrate microcontroller firmware to optimize hardware performance, ensuring seamless interaction between embedded code and circuit design.
  • Design and implement Analog-to-Digital (ADC) input circuits, ensuring accurate signal acquisition, proper scaling, filtering, and noise immunity.
  • Incorporate robust input protection techniques (e.g., TVS diodes, current-limiting resistors, ESD protection) to safeguard against electrical transients and environmental stressors.
  • Drive innovation by experimenting with novel circuit architectures, component selections, and firmware optimizations to push the boundaries of performance and reliability.
  • Rapidly prototype and iterate PCB designs using simulation, breadboarding, and quick-turn fabrication to validate concepts early and often.
  • Balance creativity with engineering rigor, ensuring designs meet strict reliability, EMI/EMC compliance, and manufacturability requirements.
  • Design for extreme conditions, ensuring circuits operate flawlessly under temperature extremes, power fluctuations, moisture exposure, and physical stress.
  • Optimize circuit performance using signal integrity analysis, power efficiency modeling, and thermal management strategies.
  • Solve complex electrical challenges through hands-on debugging, testing, and iterative refinement.
  • Explore new ways to reduce cost and complexity in electrical designs while maintaining or improving performance.
  • Rethink conventional approaches to PCB layout, power management, and communication protocols to create smarter, more efficient systems.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (mechanical, firmware, quality, and manufacturing) to create seamless, high-performance product solutions.
  • Identify, qualify, and support component suppliers and manufacturers while ensuring robust design-for-manufacturability (DFM) and design-for-testability (DFT) practices.
  • Ensure all electrical designs are documented and accessible, including: schematic diagrams and PCB layout files, firmware, architecture and code documentation
  • Compliance reports and performance testing data
  • Stay at the forefront of electrical design and embedded systems by researching cutting-edge components, power management techniques, and wireless communication technologies.
  • Challenge assumptions and test the limits of what’s possible in circuit design, always searching for a better, smarter, and more elegant solution.
