Description:
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Electrical Engineer will work in tandem with the Lead Electrical Engineer and team to support the development and execution of electrical systems for large oil sands projects, on behalf of a large Oil & Gas company, based in Calgary but with field visits to Project sites north of Fort McMurray.
Responsibilities include collaborating with contractors, reviewing design documents, supporting procurement, ensuring compliance with applicable standards, and troubleshooting operational issues. The role involves both field and office-based work, including equipment walkdowns, developing engineering deliverables, and providing technical support during construction and commissioning phases.
The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of experience in electrical engineering, particularly in the oil and gas or mining sectors, and be skilled in power distribution and Canadian Electrical Code standards. Strong communication, problem-solving, and team collaboration skills are essential.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, CERTIFICATIONS
- Electrical Engineering Degree is required
- Registration with APEGA as a professional member is required
- Must possess a valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s Licence.
EXPERIENCE
- 10+ years experience in electrical engineering design with significant oil and gas or mining industry experience
- Experience with EPC projects and design processes
- Field Experience working with equipment on mineral processing plants, large oil sands facilities as well as hands on electrical engineering knowledge in the field is a definite asset
Responsibilities:
- Analyze and bring to the Project Engineer’s attention any instruction to the Contractor(s) that may affect Scope or Work, Schedule, Costs and/or applicable standards and specifications
- Coordinate the participation of the various Canadian Natural groups, ensuring that input to the Contractor(s) is adequate and timely, and in accordance with the roles & responsibilities defined in the approved RACI charts
- Foster a productive and open communication with the other project teams and operations.
- Provide design for electrical systems for all phases of the project including, detailed design, construction, and commissioning and start-up
- Develop and review project documents, specifications, equipment data sheets, plant layouts
- Work with EPC’s in the development of engineering deliverables
- Support procurement for supply of equipment.
- Review and approval of vendor documents for purchased equipment
- Ensure construction conforms to the approved Construction Work Package plans and specifications
- Write scopes of work for engineering, construction contractor or Albian Electrical Maintenance;
- Create small design packages as required;
- Provide field engineering support to area construction managers and participate in equipment walk downs.
- Complete EHT design and Construction Work Packages
- Provide remote technical support and assistance during construction, pre-commissioning, commissioning and start-up
- Review all relevant redlined drawings and submit to document control for final as-building.
- Provide input to electrical protection settings and arc flash hazards
- Manage and report status of assigned Engineering Work Orders and MOC projects.
