Description

Position: Electrician (Pending Award) Location: McMurdo Station, South Pole or Palmer Station Type: Full-Time, Contract, Duration: Approx. 5 months Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location Seasonal Contract position supporting the National Science Foundation managed United States Antarctic Program as part of the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC). Electricians will perform electrical maintenance or construction work, or any combination thereof, under the supervision of the Electrician Foreman, PM Coordinator, or Facilities Maintenance Supervisor. Tasking is based on employee’s prior work experience and ASC schedule requirements. • Position Responsibilities: o Install, maintain, adjust, operate, test and repair branch circuits, power distribution wiring, electrical equipment, fixtures, lighting systems, and conduit in compliance with the National Electric Code (NEC) o Diagnose, repair, and perform scheduled Preventative Maintenance on existing electrical systems, equipment, fixtures, and infrastructure o Install fixtures, wiring conduits, motors and other electrical equipment o Inspect transformers and circuit breakers and other electrical components. Accomplish tasking working from verbal information, schematics, blueprints, wiring diagrams, documents, vendor/manufacturer manuals, and applicable electrical specifications and codes o Work standard computations relating to load requirements of wiring or electrical equipment o Use a variety of electrician’s hand tools and measuring and testing instruments o Analyze situations and make technical decisions based on specifications, safety, and electrical codes o Perform ongoing risk and hazard assessment while executing tasking o Appropriately use personnel protective equipment to include Arc Flash, electrical rated boots, gloves and non-conductive equipment o Timely response to emergency service calls during and outside of normal working hours o Work directly with other departments to plan and complete tasking o Utilize the assistance of other station personnel to complete tasking, or assist other trades or departments with their tasking as appropriate o Advise immediate Supervisor of job progress and material/labor requirements o Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of hours worked, tasking performed, materials used, and processes involved o Prepare and document work plans, job hazard analysis, job safety analysis, code required forms, checklists, and internal procedural documents as required o Follow established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), suggest revisions as needed, and create SOPs as directed o Perform tasking outdoors in environmentally challenging conditions including wind and extreme cold weather o Proactively identify any unsafe conditions, hazards, or Code violations and communicate them effectively o Comply with all ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management and Quality Assurance requirements o Participate in Work Center Safety Program and ASC safety objectives o Be a responsible, clean, and safe custodian of work areas, tools, equipment and spare parts o Perform other duties as required • Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses: o High School diploma or GED o A current Journeyman Electrician license, a current Master Electrician license, or equivalent Union membership in good standing. A Journeyman license requiring less than 8,000 hours or of the Residential type shall not be considered. o Minimum four years (8,000 Hours) documented experience in all phases of electrical work including rough-in, trim-out, wiring of electrical equipment and fixtures, conduit installation, and power distribution wiring including voltages up to 480 • Expected Skills and Competencies: o Thorough knowledge of the current National Electrical Code and the principles of electricity Experience in construction and/or maintenance of commercial and/or industrial facilities o Possess the competencies, willingness, and ability to perform the duties of position o Skilled in ability to read and interpret design drawings, specifications, diagrams, maintenance manual and manufacturer’s troubleshooting guides to accomplish tasking o Experienced developing written work plans, job hazard analysis, and job safety analysis related to the work activities under a permit to work system o Thorough knowledge of the principles of electricity and the current National Electrical Code o Proficient in the use of electrical/electronic and mechanical test equipment, instruments, measuring devices, and shop tools such as soldering units, meters, scopes, and probes o Highly skilled at troubleshooting using appropriate testing devices o Extremely knowledgeable regarding occupational hazards of the electrical trade and related safety precautions o Expert in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical systems and equipment o Knowledgeable concerning heating and air conditioning systems o Experienced in maintenance of commercial, government, industrial, and/or institutional facilities o Possess prior computer experience and be able and willing to learn and effectively utilize computer-based labor, inventory, and maintenance tracking applications o Proficient in LOTO procedures for various tasking o Proficient in electrical safety procedures (NFPA 70E and OSHA) o Proficient in risk assessment and determination of PPE appropriate to specific tasking o Knowledgeable of limits of PPE and proper maintenance of PPE o Familiar with fall protection and respirator use o Competent analyzing situations and making technical and safety decisions based on specifications and applicable codes and manufacturer guidelines o Solid decision-making ability and sound judgment to safely and effectively solve problems o Good organizational and planning skills • Preferred: o Training or certification on NFPA 70E: Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace o Experience with installation, repair, and maintenance of heat trace on outdoor insulated piping o Experience with installation, repair, and maintenance of permanently installed UPS systems o Experience with installation, repair, and maintenance of motor controls and Variable Frequency Drives o Experience with Maximo or other Computerized Maintenance Management System o Experience with installation, repair, and maintenance of airfield runway lighting (McMurdo only) o Experience working with voltages up to 4160 (McMurdo and South Pole) Physical and/or Other Requirements: o Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods o Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica o Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer o Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF o Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position. o Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position. o Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives. o Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States o Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.

Responsibilities
