JOB SUMMARY

Facilities Management at CU Boulder encourages applications for an Electrician! This position’s primary focus is bulb replacement, emergency and exit light replacement and testing, replacing light fixture ballasts, maintaining walk and roadway lighting and assisting the Electrical Trades II positions in the Shop.

WHO WE ARE

Facilities Management is responsible for the overall physical development and maintenance of the campus. The mission of the department is to provide a safe physical environment that promotes the advancement and transfer of knowledge.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

The anticipated work schedule is Monday - Friday from 7:00am - 3:30pm. This position may be required to work weekends, alternate or extended shifts at the discretion of the work unit supervisor.
This position is eligible for our Facilities Management Employee Referral Program.

Responsibilities

Assist Journey-level Electrician

  • Assist journey-level electricians with installation of electrical system components. Examples include installing wire ways and motors, and assisting with the installation of a variable frequency drive (VFD - a device that allows for different frequency output to conserve energy).

Lamps and Ballasts

  • Replace lamps and/or ballasts in light fixtures. Determine the type of lamp required including wattage, pin configuration, and color temperature. When replacing a ballast, determine if the power is off, ballast type, voltage, and lamp configuration. Determine if ballast is electrical waste or hazardous waste containing polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB). Remove, identify, store, and track all old lamps per United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations.

Emergency/Exit Lights

  • Responsible for testing, inspecting, repairing or replacing exit and emergency lights. Based on a preventive maintenance work order for exit/emergency lights, push the test button, the light goes through the test sequence and indicates if the light is operating correctly. If test fails, replace the failed component. If it cannot be repaired, replace the unit.

Bi-monthly Stand-by Generator Test

  • Perform a bimonthly generator test on all stand-by generators to ensure generators and associated transfer switches are in working order in the event of a power outage. Exercise generators by running them for 30 minutes under a visual inspection of the instrument panel and generator and report problems.

Paperwork & Scheduling

  • Complete material issuance requests and purchase requests to procure material needed. Close out work orders and schedule work for the following day. When closing work orders, include closing comments and ensure repair work orders are created. As an essential services employee, respond on an “as needed” basis; this may include alternative work schedules. Employee is required to drive a university vehicle to carry tools, materials, and complete work. Follow all safety policies, procedures and guidelines, and adhere to standing operating procedures for assignments and use of equipment. Participate in and complete all safety trainings. Report potential safety hazards, mistakes, accidents and/or procedural violations in a timely manner.
