SUMMARY:

Theatre Cedar Rapids (TCR) is a non-profit professionally run, community based theater committed to delivering high-quality performances while providing an inclusive space for people of all ages to engage in the arts. TCR offers a wide range of theatrical productions, educational programs, and events that foster creativity and enrich the cultural landscape of the region.
The Electrics and Media Lead works closely with the Scenic and Lighting Director, Technical Director, and production lighting designer and is responsible for coordinating the crew that will execute the design. The Electrics and Media Lead needs to have a working knowledge of lighting systems equipment and operation, including the ability to read and execute from a light plot and associated paperwork. This individual tracks light and projection equipment inventory, maintenance, and repair.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience
  • 2-4 years’ experience as a Lighting Technician and/or Master Electrician in a theatrical environment
  • Proficient in safe practices and methods regarding electrical systems and equipment
  • Working knowledge of light plots and related paperwork.
  • Some knowledge of drafting and lighting database software (Lightwright)
  • Experience with intelligent lighting
  • Experience with digital lighting consoles and programming - especially ETC EOS family.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with digital projectors and associated “show control” software such as QLab
  • Experience integrating LED lighting into scenic elements (including neon and LED tape)
  • Experience operating genie lifts
  • Basic knowledge of carpentry and power tools.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to safely lift at least 50 pounds
  • Must be able to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to lifting and bending, as well as climbing A-frame and extension ladders
  • Ability to work from heights (grids, catwalks, ladders, scaffolding, and lifts)
  • Available to work nights and weekends, with flexibility

COMPENSATION:

  • 20 hours per week, part time. $30/hr. (Some weeks may require more and some less than the average of 20 hours.)
  • Hourly rate as reviewed and set annually at formal performance review. Performance based raises will be considered and determined by the level of success achieved as defined by the responsibilities of this job description. Future growth potential into head electrician and other related areas including full time employment.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain the lighting, projections, and SFX elements associated with TCR productions. This may include equipment owned by TCR and rented for TCR productions.
  • Track light and projection equipment inventory, maintenance, and repair needs.
  • Attend and participate in technical rehearsals, load-In, strike, and production meetings
  • Identify the needs for electrics and media labor and schedule labor in consultation with the Scenic and Lighting Director, lighting designer, and projection designer.
  • Meet with the lighting designer to review the light plot(s) and associated paperwork, address questions and concerns, and review equipment availability and budget.
  • Meet with the projection designer to review plans and intentions and discuss needed equipment and labor.
  • Work with technical director and shop foreman to properly and safely integrate lighting and projection elements into fabricated scenery.
  • Establish and execute power, data, and signal distribution for lighting and projections as-needed.
  • Organize, schedule, and lead electrics load-in and focus in consultation with the production team.
  • Inventory and order consumables such as gel, patterns, gaff tape, markers, tie line, etc in a timely manner.
  • Oversee electrics and projection crew work and ensure all crew members adhere to safety practices.
  • Oversee clean-up at the end of each work call.
  • Oversee focus work call with designer.
  • Lead work sessions as needed to make required adjustments to light plot.
  • Perform weekly dimmer checks during the run of the show.
  • Available for established “on call” windows for emergency trouble shooting and repairs of lighting and projection equipment. Manage the staffing of other “on call” periods in consultation with Scenic and Lighting Supervisor when not available.
  • Order and maintain consumables during run of show as-needed.
  • Work with stage management and run crew to ensure proper and safe checks and use of lighting and projection equipment.
  • Lead electrics strike, including the organizing of crew. Organize strike in consultation with carpentry and props.
  • Work with the rest of the production team to ensure proper communication when lighting and projection elements interact with areas such as carpentry, costumes, and props.
  • Arrange for return of borrowed or rented equipment.
  • Attend production meetings (often online)
