Hiring Agency: Transportation - Agency 27 Location: North Platte, NE Hiring Rate: $20.474 Job Posting: JR2025-00020614 Electronics Technician Senior - North Platte (Open) Applications No Longer Accepted On (If no date is displayed, job is posted as open until closed): 11-15-2025 Job Description: The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is looking for a self-motivated field technician to work on NDOT rights-of-way to maintain electronic devices that keep our roadways safe for motorists. JOB DUTIES Install, configure, troubleshoot, and repair Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) equipment such as traffic signals, battery backup systems, digital highway cameras, fixed and portable dynamic messaging systems, variable speed advisory signs, weather information systems, automated closure gates, automatic traffic recording equipment, and associated network infrastructure (wireless, copper, and fiber networks). Maintain detailed records of configurations, programming, and maintenance activities. Direct and perform physical/manual tasks to prepare work sites/stations for installation and maintenance of electronic equipment using various types of equipment such as small hand tools, fabrication machinery, portable power generators, ditching equipment, concrete saws, and aerial lifts. Perform preventive maintenance on equipment to ensure that necessary inspections, adjustments, and replacement of parts are made to prevent malfunctions or safety hazards from occurring. Record activities into test and maintenance logs. Locate, maintain, and troubleshoot outside plant (OSP) copper and fiber cabling. Install, troubleshoot, and repair network components (wireless endpoints, cellular modems, switches, media converters, NTP devices, etc.) Order and receive supplies, materials, and equipment to maintain adequate stock levels of commonly used items and to obtain unusual or special-purpose items for specific jobs to be performed. Record time spent, materials used, supplies and equipment purchased, and other necessary information to determine the cost of work performed. Demonstrate to end users and other technicians the advanced operations and features of ITS equipment and associated hardware. Keep up to date with technological changes and improvements regarding ITS hardware, related software, and other equipment, and troubleshooting and operational practices. Perform other duties as assigned. Requirements/Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Two-year vocational degree in electronics, electricity, or other similar technologies and experience in installing, maintaining, and repairing electronic devices/instruments, computer equipment, or related automated/electrical circuitry and hardware. Additional years of experience in the work described may substitute for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. Preferred Qualifications: IMSA Certification Other: Must be able to be placed on-call for after-hours traffic signal repair. Working in adverse weather conditions may be required. Valid operator's license. Occasional overnight travel for training and regional assistance. KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES Computer Systems & Networking: Expertise in computer hardware/software for operations, diagnostics, and record-keeping; network fundamentals including hardware deployment (routers/switches/access points), IP addressing (1Pv4/1Pv6, public/private), subnetting, protocols (TCP/IP, HTTP/HTTPS, DNS) with OSI layers/ports, DHCP, troubleshooting tools (ping/traceroute/netstat/Wireshark), and basic security (firewalls/encryption). Electronics & Circuitry: Understanding of components, circuits, materials, repair techniques/tools, and electrical principles/theory.Tools, materials, and advanced methods of electronics installation, maintenance, and repair work. Troubleshooting & Analysis Tools: Proficiency in tools like multimeter, OTDR, Wireshark, OLTS, spectrum analyzer, cable tester, and power quality analyzer for diagnosing ITS/network issues. Preventive Maintenance: Skills in inspection, adjustment, and replacement to maintain equipment and mitigate hazards. Documentation Practices: Ability to keep detailed records of setups, modifications, schematics, and maintenance logs. Standards & Regulations: Awareness of National/Nebraska Electrical Codes, FCC rules, and safety protocols for electrical/high-voltage/heavy machinery work.
