JOB OVERVIEW

The Gitwangak Education Society is seeking a dedicated and passionate Elementary Primary Teacher to join our team and teach Grades 1–3. This is a seasonal school-year position offering the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the Gitwangak community.
The successful candidate will foster a safe, inclusive, and culturally enriched learning environment, blending BC curriculum standards with Gitxsan language, culture, and on-the-land learning. This position requires creativity, adaptability, and a strong commitment to supporting the academic and personal growth of every student.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid BC Teaching Certificate in good standing
  • Valid BC Driver’s License
  • Recent successful experience in elementary teaching (primary grades preferred)
  • Experience with literacy and numeracy programs listed above is an asset
  • Knowledge of special education practices, including IEP development and implementation
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Ability to work as part of a collaborative team in a positive, supportive manner
  • Commitment to incorporating Indigenous culture and language into the classroom (Gitxsan knowledge an asset; willingness to learn required)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and educational technology for lesson planning, grading, and communication

Responsibilities
  • Develop and deliver engaging lesson plans for students in Grades 1–3, incorporating innovative teaching strategies and cultural learning
  • Teach core subjects such as English, Math, and other relevant areas, integrating special education strategies when needed
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs and abilities of students
  • Foster a classroom environment that encourages participation, collaboration, and respect
  • Monitor and assess student progress using tools such as Read Well, Nelson Literacy, Jump Math, Math Makes Sense, DIBELS/Acadience, and CAT 2
  • Provide constructive feedback to students and maintain clear communication with parents and guardians
  • Manage classroom behaviour in alignment with school-wide rules and discipline policies
  • Infuse Gitxsan language and cultural teachings into daily lessons
  • Support students with special needs, including those with language delays and behavioural challenges
  • Collaborate with and guide Education Assistants to ensure consistent and supportive instruction
  • Participate in school events, fundraising activities, and cultural/language programs
  • Maintain accurate student records and prepare progress reports
