POSITION SPECIFICS

We are seeking an Embedded Hardware and Software Engineer to join the Embedded Systems team of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State. The embedded designs will span a many disciplines including sensing, acoustics, signal processing, power electronics, communications and networking.

You will:

  • Coordinate the development of embedded system hardware and software in the areas of sensing, robotics, and power electronics
  • Participate in the specification of system requirements, and hardware software architecture design
  • Design analog and digital electronic circuits and circuit boards
  • Assist in the development of new projects and proposals
  • Assist in the management of embedded system design and development tasks and projects

Required skills/experience areas include:

  • Embedded software design using C in both a RTOS and bare metal environment
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP networking principles and embedded stacks
  • Mixed Signal Design
  • Analog to digital converters, and analog front-end design

Preferred skills/experience areas include:

  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering
  • GCC/Eclipse based toolchains
  • Linux and embedded real-time operating systems
  • DSP algorithm implementations on deeply embedded platforms
  • FPGA development, including test and verification
  • Schematic entry and PCB Layout using Altium Designer
  • ECAD/MCAD co-design using Solidworks
  • ARM Cortex M 32-bit microcontrollers
  • High layer count design employing BGA components, stackups for high speed signals, and transmission lines
  • Common MCU IO such as SPI, I2S, USB, and Ethernet
  • Matlab, Labview, C, C++, and C#; design of DC-DC converters, AC motor drives, and control algorithms
  • Sensors such as MEMs accelerometers, piezoelectric sensing, MEMs microphones, etc.
