EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN

SUMMARY:
The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) will perform patient care tasks consistent with their level of training and scope of practice. This includes general patient assessment, basic airway and breathing management, CPR and defibrillation utilizing an AED, basic treatment of shock, emergency childbirth, and the care of medical emergencies. In addition, the EMT must be proficient in the basic care of victims of trauma that include basic trauma assessment, bleeding control helmet removal, extremity immobilization and splinting, and spinal immobilization. The EMT must also be able to document their patient care as part of an electronic medical record. When operating in an advanced life support setting, the EMT must work within their licensure level, and will perform care under the clinical supervision of a Paramedic. The EMT will be required to safely operate agency vehicles in both emergency and non-emergency scenarios, as well as utilize multiple pieces of medical and patient movement equipment according to manufacture instructions for use and agency guidelines. EMTs must also possess the willingness to assist caring for patients in the emergency departments of Cayuga Health System as directed by their leadership team, and within a well-defined in-hospital scope. Cayuga Health System values continuing education, and EMTs who have achieved their Advanced Emergency Medical Technician - Intermediate (AEMT-I) or Advanced Emergency Medical Technician - Critical Care (AEMT-CC) certifications will be recognized for this achievement and the additional skill sets they bring into the organization.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.
- Valid New York State Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B) certification.
- Valid American Heart Association (or equivalent) Basic Life Support CPR certification.
- Valid Motor Vehicle Operators License from the state of legal residence, with a driving record that demonstrates general compliance with motor vehicle laws.
- Successful completion of the emergency Vehicle Operator’s Certification (12 months of hire).
- Two years of full-time employment as an EMT on an ambulance.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Possess manual dexterity that allows for safe operation of vehicles & care of patients
- Possess the ability to bend, stoop, and crawl on uneven terrain
- Possess the ability to perform duties in low light and enclosed spaces
- Willingness to work shifts typically lasting between 12-24 hours
- Possess the ability to perform duties in all environmental conditions
- Ability to work with equipment as part of a team to safely move patients
