QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Qualified Solicitor or Barrister with a current practising certificate, or equivalent qualification with eligibility to practise.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Strong knowledge and experience in Employment Law, or the ability to quickly develop expertise.
  • Proven experience of litigation, ideally including tribunal and court proceedings.
  • Practical knowledge of public law and local authority governance.
  • Experience in providing legal advice to senior stakeholders.
  • Excellent drafting and negotiation skills for contracts, agreements, and governance documents.
Responsibilities

WHAT’S INVOLVED WITH THIS ROLE:

The Employment Solicitor will join the Council’s Litigation Team, providing expert legal advice and representation in Employment Law matters. The role involves advising on employment law, policy and governance, managing and conducting litigation, and representing the Council at tribunals, hearings, inquiries, and in court. The postholder may also contribute to civil litigation matters and support clerking of education appeals during peak periods, ensuring the delivery of a comprehensive and professional legal service to the Authority.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide legal advice to Council Members, Officers, and associated organisations as instructed by the Director of Governance and Legal.
  • Represent the Council in litigation matters, including acting as an advocate in Employment Tribunals, courts, hearings, and inquiries.
  • Draft and negotiate contracts, agreements, governance instruments, and related legal documents.
  • Conduct litigation on behalf of the Council, managing cases and ensuring effective resolution.
  • Prepare cases and documentation for legal and quasi-legal proceedings.
  • Handle disputes, complaints, and provide legal risk management support to the Council.
