ENERGY RESOURCE PLANNING MANAGING ENGINEER

Colorado Springs Utilities is seeking a creative and collaborative individual with a vision for the future of the energy industry to lead our Energy Resource Planning team within the Energy Planning & Innovation section. We are planning for the energy transition by adding 1,600 megawatts of new generation by 2030, piloting technologies and systems to connect and modernize our grid, and helping our customers participate and benefit from new renewable resources. We are also implementing our Clean Heat Plan that will be de-carbonize the natural gas system through multiple strategies including energy efficiency and electrification.
You will work closely with our Demand Side Management and Distributed Energy Resource Strategy team in areas of energy efficiency, demand response, customer owned generation and storage, electric vehicles, microgrids and other emerging technologies.

As a key member of the Resource and Innovation Planning leadership team, you will report directly to the Manager of Energy Planning & Innovation and exercise managerial authority and strategic leadership over the electric and gas resource planning team. In this job, you will lead community discussions related to future electric and gas projects and should feel comfortable presenting in front of large groups, executive teams and regulatory bodies.

As the Managing Engineer of Energy Resource Planning, you and your team of engineers and technical employees will:

  • Build and foster a strong team through establishing performance standards and motivating the team to successfully deliver team goals and objectives
  • Develop and implement team’s 5-year strategic plan that is aligned with organizational objectives, operational plans, and working collaboratively with other departments
  • Lead annual updates to the Electric and Gas Integrated Resource Plans with a goal of providing cost-effective and reliable energy that is environmentally sustainable and incorporates innovative business practices
  • Lead the refinement and upkeep of the Utilities’ Plexos electric and gas resource model
  • Lead the coordination of stakeholder groups to update and monitor planning inputs and assumptions
  • Support the project delivery team in acquisition of new resources
  • Support Utilities transition to a Regional Transmission Organization
  • Recommend changes to the Energy Business Model that will result in long term sustainable business practices
  • Provide leadership for grid modernization projects, initiatives and activities
  • Perform technical research of industry changes and advancements
  • Meet financial objectives by properly preparing an annual budget, forecasting expenditures, analyzing variances and initiating corrective actions as needed

Who You Are: The ideal candidate will demonstrate a track record of implementing creative and innovative solutions, has prepared resource and strategic plans that are forward thinking and has formal, direct management of engineering staff. Additionally, will have experience in gas or electric resource planning, design and implementation including planning for and integrating Distributed Energy Resources and Regional Markets. A Bachelor’s Degree in a related engineering field is required and a Master’s Degree in engineering or business and Professional Engineer registration is preferred.
