Consider joining the Duke Energy team, where you'll find a friendly work environment, opportunities for growth and development, recognition for your work, and competitive pay and benefits. *This position will be hired at either a level III or Senior level based on experience* Position Summary: This position serves as a System Protection and Control Subject Matter Expert (SME) at Duke Energy within the Duke Energy Power Grid Operations Asset Management Governance Distribution Protection Automation & Control Enterprise Standards team, responsible for developing and managing protection and control standards, governance guidance, and templates for relays, reclosers, switchgear, and related equipment. The role oversees operational technology standards for protective relays, controls, automation devices, and manages DPAC ES labs in Cincinnati, OH and Plainfield, IN. The incumbent also supports Midwest asset management functions with local standards and governance. Primary location is 4th and Main in Cincinnati, OH; other locations or Engineer 3 level may be considered depending on experience or business needs. Regular travel to the Cincinnati office is required if based elsewhere. Responsibilities: Development of protection & control standard settings, logic, and control templates Development of related standards application guidance and position documents for standards application SME input into training and work method related documentation and training artifacts Hands on testing within relay lab, field lab, factory and field acceptance testing of new and existing concepts, working with switchgear, relays, and control components Integration of various sensing, control, automation, communications, and protection capabilities into technical standard solution systems Close working cooperation with peer team leads for Distribution Enterprise System Protection Team and team members within DPAC ES, peers in the Equipment and Construction Standards team, PGO Asset Management Governance, and stakeholders within PGO Asset Management Mentorship and peer leadership with fellow engineers Basic/Required Qualifications III Bachelor of Science in Engineering obtained from an ABET accredited program, OR a master’s degree in Engineering in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Minimum of four (4) years of engineering experience Required/Basic Qualifications for Senior: Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program In addition to required degree, six (6) years minimum required related experience A master’s degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree Desired Qualifications: Incumbents should have the knowledge and experience with the ability to design, create standards, and evaluate system protection and control solutions for medium voltage distribution systems (4kV-36kV class). Experience performing system protection and coordination studies. Familiarity/experience with advanced protocols, IEC 61850 GOOSE, DNP3.0, including programming and testing advanced protection and automation systems with peer-to-peer communications. Familiarity with communication control concepts, such as SCADA. Programming and testing advanced protection and automation systems with peer-to-peer communications. Experience integrating and testing protection and control systems. Familiarity/experience with SEL protection automation controls/relays (SEL-651R, SEL-487, SEL-451, SEL 751) and associated configuration software. Familiarity/experience with OMICRON test equipment and associated Test Universe software. Familiarity with SEL Quickset software suites. Experience developing/programming relay and control design templates, including development of system protection relay settings and logic. Experience creating standards, standard settings templates, and application guides. Experience performing factory acceptance and field acceptance testing of systems. Familiarity with related industry standards, such as ANSI (Associated Electric Systems Interface), IEEEE 519 Harmonics: IEC 61850 Communication networks and systems for power utility automation. Related Transmission Protection and Control Experience. Related Distribution Protection Automation Control Experience. Related Distribution field engineering experience. Related experience with Integration of power plant, distributed resources, or major industrial/commercial/government customer load facilities. Additional Preferred Qualifications: Proficient in engineering theories and principles. Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations. Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills. Proficient in principles of project management. Registered Professional Engineer (PE). Experience in the utility industry. Working Conditions: Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility. Specific Requirements: Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or PE. Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S.
