Our Applied Science practice leverages a unique combination of technologies and expertise to engineer practical solutions to problems of national and international importance. We apply expertise in solid and fluid dynamics, materials science, acoustics, risk assessments, and computational simulation methods to solve complex problems. We perform research, mathematical modeling, software development, and design to manage risks to life safety in military platforms and installations, ships and submarines, critical infrastructure, tall buildings, public facilities, industrial and petrochemical plants, and automotive and airborne vehicles. Military, government, corporate, and academic clients value the validation of Applied Science’s software and the critical insights gained from correlating analysis with testing.
The Role
We have an opportunity for an Engineer Intern to join our Applied Science team over the summer at our Aberdeen office. The candidate should have an interest in assessing and mitigating risks within a range of industries, through analytical and numerical approaches, to make lasting contributions to the world around us.

Responsibilities

• The candidate’s main responsibilities will be focused on R&D activities and they will be expected to undertake tasks in both technical safety and fluid dynamics, examples including:
• Research into decarbonization technologies such as batteries, CCS and hydrogen.
• Using research and modelling to support validation of Computational Fluid Dynamic models.
• Data handling and visualisation.

There will also be opportunities to contribute to project work as part of a project team, activities including:

• Risk and safety studies.
• Modelling hazards (e.g. fires, explosions or gas releases) using numerical / computational techniques.
• Updating internal library / databases and guidance documents based on current practice and standards.

Qualifications

• Currently in penultimate year of Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical / Process / Mechanical Engineering (or similar Science or Engineering degrees).
• Programming skills, ideally in Python 3, though candidates with some limited programming experience from their undergraduate studies will also be considered.
• Good academic record.
