INTRODUCTION

Are you looking to start a career in the rail industry? We have an exciting opportunity to join the locomotive maintenance team at Crewe as an Engineering Apprentice. We’re looking to support new talent in gaining a Level 3 Rail Engineering Technician qualification through learning with our experienced engineers at the depot and creating a solid foundation of all things Traction & Rolling Stock through the apprenticeship programme.
This is a 36-month apprenticeship working on the depot where you will gain an advanced understanding of electro-diesel locomotives. Alongside working in the depot, you will also be released in block weeks to complete your course with our chosen college.
As part of the selection process, you will be asked to complete an online mechanical test and attend an assessment centre day held at one of our depots.

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

We’re looking for people with a keen interest in engineering and the desire and ambition to build a successful career with DB Cargo UK.
Willing to play an active part of your own training and development.
Inquisitive minded who like to understand how things work and develop your learning.
Someone who can work as part of a team and communicate with colleagues in an honest and effective way.
Work with safety as a number one priority with the ability to follow instructions, rules and regulations, to ensure all maintenance is carried out in a safe manner.
You must hold a minimum of three GCSE’s including Maths and English at Grade 4 (the equivalent of a C grade) or above.
You must live within a 60-minute commute of the depot location
You must also be 18 years of age or above due to the safety critical nature of this role. A safety critical medical will be carried out.

Responsibilities

The 36-month apprenticeship will cover all rail engineering skills through classroom-based learning and hands on depot tasks all while being supported by a skills coach and the engineering team at the depot.
You will develop your skillset in the below practical and theory based elements of Traction & Rolling Stock
Safe and Professional working practices including legislation, regulation, industry procedures and safety requirements.
The scientific, technical, engineering, mathematical and design principles that are required to support the maintenance of our Loco Fleet.
How to work effectively and contribute to engineering solutions and innovation including understanding and applying problem solving techniques and diagnostics, project planning and management, time management and quality management and assurance systems.
Career skills such as time management, working analytically, communication and organisation.
Understanding engineering drawings and electrical schematics.
Learn how to handle equipment safely and correctly.
Use systematic faults diagnosis techniques to assist in the rectification of electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
Use test and measuring instruments in both metric and imperial units.

You will learn how to understand the fundamentals of traction and rolling stock components including the below.

  • Braking systems
  • Axels
  • Wheels and bearings
  • Suspension
  • AC electric power collection
  • Heating ventilation
  • Air conditioning

Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives and learning the importance of workplace improvement and quality assurance
At the end of the apprenticeship programme, you will take part in an end point assessment to showcase everything you have achieved at DB Cargo UK.
To achieve this, you will be working in the depot and have scheduled time to complete your classroom-based learning. This will be achieved through block weeks of classroom-based learning with our apprenticeship provider.
