As a charitable affiliate of AARP, we serve AARP members and nonmembers alike. Through vigorous legal advocacy and evidence-based solutions, and by strengthening supportive community connections, we foster resilience, advance equity and restore hope.
The Engineering & Architecture Director serves as the senior technical leader within AARP Foundation, supporting technology delivery teams in designing solutions that meet AARP’s technology standards. This role partners with Technology Product Delivery Teams and AARP Program Teams to incorporate business strategy into long-term roadmaps, recommending alternative technical approaches where necessary. The Director actively participates in the Enterprise Architecture Review Board process and provides guidance and direction to teams as they adopt technology standards. The Director ensures compliance with InfoSec and Privacy standards and maintains a view of technical health across Foundation technologies to influence prioritization and solution design. This role collaborates with management to identify opportunities to streamline technology processes and develop new procedures that support the Foundation, as well as connection points to the AARP Enterprise.

Responsibilities:

  • Establishes a technical roadmap for business technologies that considers value-based outcomes, costs to maintain, supportability, and performance.
  • Ensures sound integration, data, security, and business architecture design throughout all stages within the platform and/or capability lifecycle.
  • Provides oversight and guidance to delivery teams responsible for rapid delivery and development of technical solutions that align with business and/or platform desired outcomes.
  • Serves as an SME to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to platform or capability systems, solutions, and services.
  • Innovates and drives continuous improvements of implementation methodology and technical service offerings based on customer/employee experiences or other enterprise objectives/outcomes.
  • Participates in Enterprise Architecture Review Board and collaborates with extended technology counterparts across the enterprise to share information, leverage enterprise solutions to the extent possible, and strengthen information technology governance and adoption of standards.
  • Develops and maintains deep technical knowledge and expertise related to domain area systems, solutions, services, and applications.
  • Ensures Information Security and Technology Governance Standards are adopted by delivery teams, educating teams and stakeholders on potential risk and impact.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience as a developer or engineer working with Salesforce and/or AWS technologies, with an additional 5+ years of combined experience as a solution architect.
  • 5+ years of depth with increasing responsibility through roles in development, solution architecture, and technical leadership.
  • 8+ years of expanding breadth of skills, with a broad view of technical infrastructure and processes.
  • Strong application design skills, along with expertise in data, integration, and security architecture.
  • Strong presentation skills and the ability to present and defend a point of view to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Preferred:

  • Certifications: TOGAF, Salesforce Certified Technical Architect, SOA Architect Certification, AWS Certified Solutions Architect, any level of ITIL, CISSP, or AWS Certified Data Engineer.
