As a Geologist (Geological Engineer), initially, you will be assigned to the Blue Line project in Montreal. Under the functional supervision of the Technical Director, you will be responsible for a range of tasks aimed at mapping the excavation walls related to metro stations, numerous auxiliary stations, and part of the tunnel. This mapping and its interpretation are crucial for the design and execution of the work.
By participating in the Blue Line project, you will contribute to the growth of new and ongoing Pomerleau projects, while challenging industry standards through your field-focused technical expertise. Once your assignment on the Blue Line project is completed, and depending on the project pipeline, you will be assigned to mandates across the country that require geological expertise. You will be involved in large-scale building and infrastructure construction projects, with values ranging from $1.5 million to over $1 billion.
What you will do
- Identify needs, plan, manage, or conduct field studies and site investigations to collect geological samples and data.
- Analyze available geological data for the project.
- Demonstrate excellent communication and strong engagement within the team, both internally and with client representatives.
- Participate in the evaluation and design of geological monitoring plans.
- Interpret instrumentation data and deformations caused by underground works.
- Assist subcontractors in preparing detailed geological mapping to meet project requirements.
- Provide geological reports based on on-site observations and interpretations.
- Offer geological interpretation and guidance to assess temporary stability, based on calculations and reports provided by experts and designers.
- Evaluate and contribute to the compliance of anticipated geological conditions with design parameters and GBR data. Identify potential discrepancies.
- Collaborate with engineers and construction teams regarding prevailing geological conditions and their potential impacts.
- Monitor and assess the progress of geological aspects of projects.
- Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and safety standards.
- Present findings and recommendations to clients, stakeholders, designers, and regulatory bodies.
- Coordinate drilling teams to guide exploration efforts.
- Develop and maintain geological databases.
- Stay up to date with advances in geotechnical and geological research and technology.
- Review documentation from specialized subcontractors.
This role could be for you if you have
- Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, or Geotechnical Engineering – Rock Mechanics. A Master’s or PhD in Geology is a strong asset.
- Over 8 years of relevant experience in geology applied to wall stability and underground structures, as well as in drafting and interpreting Geotechnical Baseline Reports (GBR).
- Candidates must be familiar with construction site environments and comfortable working in site offices.
- Member of the Ordre des géologues du Québec or the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ), or eligible for professional engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Canada.
- Ability to collaborate with subcontractors and specialized experts to assess required field inspections.
- Skilled in reviewing external geotechnical designs to optimize proposed solutions.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to identify priorities and ensure deadlines are met.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build and maintain harmonious working relationships.
- Demonstrates leadership qualities.
- Strong analytical and synthesis skills.
