We have the opportunity for an Engineering Lead to join our Merchant Solutions team in the Cards and Merchants Domain within BNZ Technology. Mō te Tūranga | About the Role The Engineering Lead role offers the chance to combine technical leadership with people management to drive engineering excellence in development teams. By aligning with business goals and focusing on team empowerment and engineering excellence, you’ll cultivate a high-performance culture and drive continuous improvement. We sat down with our Platform Manager, and they let us know the following about the tūranga (role). What are some day-to-day tasks the successful candidate in this role will complete? Technical Alignment: Ensure teams understand the technology strategy and priorities, aligning their efforts to deliver secure, scalable, and high-quality solutions that support business goals. People Leadership: Lead Engineers and Testers through all employee lifecycle stages—attraction, recruitment, onboarding, development, retention, and offboarding. Foster a culture of trust, collaboration, and accountability to drive performance and alignment with business goals. Oversight and Standards: Drive engineering excellence across BNZ Technology by enforcing unified standards, focusing on secure coding, automation, and a “one-way, same way” approach to ensure quality and reduce technical debt. Support and Enablement: Guide teams in problem-solving, promoting innovative approaches for continuous improvement. Resource and Capability Planning: Ensure optimal workload distribution and skill alignment to meet both delivery and operational demands effectively. What is the most exciting thing about this opportunity? You'll be part of the Merchant Solutions team, working with great people on our Merchant Acquiring Platforms. You'll support platform teams by enhancing our continuous delivery infrastructure, architecture, and engineering practices—enabling high-quality features across the domain. What is the most challenging thing about this opportunity? One of the most challenging aspects of this role is ensuring teams adhere to unified standards and practices while promoting innovation and continuous improvement. This requires balancing technical oversight with fostering a culture of trust and collaboration. What attributes will this person display in order to be successful in this role? This is an opportunity for a strong leader who is skilled in developing and motivating teams for high performance, growth, and collaboration. You will also bring excellent communication demonstrating the ability to convey goals, priorities, and technical requirements to both technical and non-technical audiences. What specific tech skills are required to be successful? Engineering Leadership Experience: Proven ability in leading technology teams, aligning with tech strategy, empowering teams, and adhering to standards. Strong Technical Background: In-depth knowledge of software engineering principles, including solution design, development processes, and deployment. As this role is going to be working with our mobile platform teams we are looking for someone with a background in mobile application development. Risk and Compliance Knowledge: Familiarity with security and regulatory practices in banking or similar industries. Agile Expertise: Proficiency in agile methodologies with a record of effective cross-functional collaboration and delivery.
