The Engineering Program Director will have responsibility for managing the project portfolio management process for the Cardiac Surgery Global Development Portfolio. Additionally, the Engineering Program Manager will be responsible for leading a team consisting of Core Team Leaders, Program Managers, and Project Management Specialists. This role is responsible for managing the processes for strategic planning, governance, and investment management for the Global CS New Product Development portfolio. The Engineering Program Director must have expertise in program planning, financial planning, portfolio management, Portfolio governance processes, and Project/Program management.
We’re seeking a self-starter with strong strategic and analytical thinking skills. Excellent communication and facilitation skills, as well as the ability to be flexible and navigate dynamic environments will be keys to success. This role will report directly to the VP of R&D, who is responsible for the Global CS R&D Portfolio.
The Cardiac Surgery Operating Unit develops life-restoring therapies and healthcare solutions that span the care continuum; integrating technologies and applying clinical and economic evidence to increase patient access, improve efficiency of procedures and deliver successful patient outcomes.
This position is based in Brooklyn Park, MN within the Cardiac Surgery (CS) Operating Unit and requires to be on-site.

  • Bachelor’s degree required in engineering, math, statistics, or a technical discipline
  • Minimum of 10 years of technical experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 8 years technical experience with 7 years of managerial experience

In general, the following responsibilities apply for the Engineering Program Director role. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Develops and manages framework for continued assessment of the CS New Product Development (NPD) portfolio, facilitating the prioritization of opportunities and driving the performance of the NPD portfolio.
  • Change Leader for the integration of Portfolio management process as standard work practice for the OU leadership staff and leads collaboration with senior executives to design ongoing portfolio reporting by business area, up to the Operating Unit President.
  • Provide PDP, Core Team, and design control training to CS PDP teams and functional mgmt.
  • Lead Global CS NPD Governance process within the CS OU for Product Development and Release Product Management portfolios, to assess project spending & processes, and manage and track spend/investment progress.
  • Lead annual finance scenario planning process for Global NPD inclusive of gathering project requests, assessing strategic alignment, developing recommendations, and providing guidance to team members on case development, as needed.
  • Serve as CS representative on corporate and/or CV4 design focused initiatives. Also supports internal and external QMS and regulator audits for design controls and PDP processes.
  • Contribute to the establishment of a common set of practices, tools, and templates for project and portfolio management and oversees the implementation of CS’s new PPM solution.
  • Define and assess KPIs showing the performance of the portfolio and use metrics and data visualization to report progress and support data-driven decision-making at the organization level.
  • Partners with key business stakeholders, including CS Operating Unit Functional leaders, to provide visibility into overall portfolio performance and serves as trusted advisor on transformation programs and intended benefits.
  • Develop models for near-long term portfolio planning and forecasting of financial spend over x (Year/month) horizons.
  • Responsible for portfolio data quality process to ensure a high level of precision in portfolio reporting.
  • Work with Therapy Strategy Teams to create a roadmap for future development aligned and prioritized to deliver the CS strategic objectives.
  • Manage the process for portfolio project, finance, resource capacity and allocation forecasting, inclusive of internal and external resources, ensuring robust scenario planning engagement with relevant stakeholders
  • Influence PMO functional initiatives/PMO assignments, ensuring consistent project & portfolio management processes with Medtronic’s APM process, and the optimization of PM practices to broaden and enable more analytical and predictive PMO capabilities in the future
  • Lead and maintain the processes to support the senior management, governance bodies, and functions in the continual improvement of performance and productivity through proactive data analysis (historical and forecasted, internal and benchmark).
  • Support and lead cross-functional teams in preparation for portfolio reviews and governance body reviews
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and proven ability to work with team members across functions and geographies and at all levels through an open, engaging, and collaborative style
