Description Purpose: Under guidance from senior engineering staff, the intern shall assist engineering team members with day-to-day tasks and project activities, including research, data analysis, and documentation. Some key responsibilities include: Support the design and development of prototypes, test setups, and experimental setups Conduct experiments, tests, and evaluations to validate design concepts, troubleshoot issues, and gather data for analysis Assist model shop with 3D printing part set up & cleanup activities Participate in brainstorming sessions and contribute ideas for product improvements, process optimizations, and innovative solutions Support productionization activities for SMU helmets and other customer related activities ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Assist Engineering Services team to develop new, improved user interface for Engineering work request system Perform fundamental Engineering tasks requiring standard techniques such as tolerance studies and design calculations Enthusiasm for learning and a passion for engineering, with a desire to gain practical experience and contribute to meaningful projects. Attend meetings, training sessions, and workshops to expand your knowledge and skills in engineering principles, methodologies, and technologies. Be given assignments within teams requiring originality and ingenuity while under Senior Engineering supervision. Schedule flexibility to support critical deadlines may be required. Requirements EDUCATION AND/OR PROFESSIONAL LICENSE(s): An Engineering Services Intern must be on track to graduate high school and have an interest in pursuing a B.S. in Engineering or related technical field. EXPERIENCE: At least one non-technical position demonstrating work skills, with one technical related work experience preferred. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Should have completed class work in the following areas: Chemistry Physics Calculus Computer Aided Design Should have the following skills and abilities: Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint Detail oriented with very good organizational, written, and verbal communication skills. Self-motivated with good team skills, strong analytical skills, and strong interpersonal skills Basic awareness of Engineering standard practices Willingness to learn new concepts and techniques Positive attitude POSITION SUPERVISES: No direct supervisory responsibilities. CONTACT WITH OTHERS: Daily contact with other engineers, managers, purchasing, manufacturing, and warehouse personnel. PHYSICAL/MENTAL/COMMUNICATION REQUIREMENTS: Employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; manual dexterity to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee may lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by the job may include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The individual must have a high level of comprehension, and a high level of general, verbal, written, and numerical intelligence. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Works majority of the day in a climate-controlled environment. TRAVEL: Generally, travel is not required LOCATION: Gentex’s Carbondale facility is located in Northeastern Pennsylvania in Lackawanna County. Carbondale, PA is about twenty miles north of Scranton, PA, 50 miles south of Binghamton, NY, and about 125 miles from New York City and Philadelphia. The area hosts numerous nearby state parks, nature preserves and local colleges and universities, including The University of Scranton and Marywood University.
