The Engineering Team Lead is a player-coach role responsible for delivery planning, quality, technical execution and the day-to-day effectiveness of a squad. This role combines hands-on engineering with coaching and delivery leadership, ensuring the team ships reliable, secure and maintainable services and UX. The Team Lead sets the operating rhythm for the squad: planning, tech solution reviews, scrum rituals, operational excellence and incident response, while lifting engineering standards through code review, feedback and strong SDLC practices. Success is measured by predictable delivery, improved team capability and a healthy balance between new feature work and operational excellence. You'll report directly to the Engineering Manager in this role. Please note, it's a full-time opportunity offering hybrid working conditions out of our Sydney CBD Office. Some of your responsibilities include and are not limited to: Squad Delivery & Execution Own squad delivery cadence, ensuring priorities are clear, work is well-scoped and progress is visible Drive planning, estimation and sequencing; keep work pragmatic and well-scoped, avoiding overengineering MVPs while managing dependencies and surfacing delivery risks early Remove blockers and coordinate cross-team contributions to keep delivery on track Ensure releases meet defined outcomes and quality standards, including readiness and rollback considerations Hands-on Engineering Contribute directly to implementation of key work, including complex services and technical spikes Set the bar for code review quality and engineering hygiene across the squad Ensure standards for testing, performance, security and maintainability are consistently applied Promote consistent service patterns, API contracts and documentation practices, including the effective and responsible use of AI-assisted coding tools to improve quality and delivery speed Operational Excellence Oversee customer support queue and production issues within the squad’s domain, ensuring timely triage and resolution Support on-call / alerting expectations and effective incident handling Drive root-cause fixes to improve reliability and reduce recurring operational load Ensure the team regularly upgrades dependencies, resolves vulnerabilities in a timely manner and maintains compliance with engineering and security expectations Analyse team bottlenecks and proactively drive technical or process improvements to improve flow, quality and operational efficiency Coaching, Feedback & Team Health Coach engineers through regular feedback, pairing and development planning Run effective retrospectives and support continuous improvement in team rituals and ways of working Create an open, safe team environment that supports learning, accountability and sustainable pace Tech Stack: PHP (Symfony) API design: RESTful APIs, versioning, documentation Microservices & distributed systems patterns Databases: MySQL and/or PostgreSQL; data modelling and query optimisation AWS: EC2, RDS, Lambda, S3, API Gateway (and related services) CI/CD: pipelines using tools such as Jenkins, TeamCity, CircleCI (or equivalent) Observability: logging, monitoring and alerting (e.g., Datadog or equivalent) Security: authentication/authorisation patterns, secure coding practices Tools: Git, Jira, Confluence Integrations: Workato (occasional support/maintenance) Our ideal candidate Senior-level engineering capability (PHP/Symfony) with strong code review skills Demonstrated ability to guide a squad through delivery, prioritisation and ambiguity with pragmatic decision-making, including knowing when an MVP is sufficient and avoiding unnecessary complexity Strong communication, stakeholder alignment and decision-making skills Ability to coach and develop engineers while maintaining hands-on contribution Strong organisational skills and comfort balancing delivery and BAU Experience improving team practices: testing, observability, security and operational readiness Comfort using AI-assisted coding tools thoughtfully and responsibly to accelerate delivery, improve quality and support engineering effectiveness More than just work 🏃🏽‍♀️ Keep Active – All employees get a Fitness First Platinum gym membership. ☕️ Daily Fuel – Barista-made coffee, breakfast, snacks, lunches and drinks on us – we got you! 📲 Phone Credits - We pay you $50 per month to put towards your plans - how good. ❤️‍🩹 Wellness Days – Receive an additional day off each month.
