Description

POSITION OVERVIEW

We are seeking a Professional Engineer to lead structural engineering efforts and help establish and uphold professional engineering practices across our portfolio of residential and commercial solar + battery storage projects. In this role, you’ll blend hands-on structural engineering with cross-functional collaboration, mentorship, oversight of EGBC permit-to-practice compliance, continued education, and field reviews as we expand our professional engineering capabilities.
You will lead the development and implementation of Shift’s professional engineering practices in support of our EGBC permit-to-practice responsibilities. This includes ownership of the Professional Practice Management Plan (PPMP), document control systems, design review procedures, and ongoing compliance with professional standards and regulatory requirements.
You will report to the Director of Project Development and collaborate closely with our designers, electricians, project managers, and permitting team to ensure projects are delivered with technical excellence, aligned to regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.

QUALIFICATIONS

· Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (or a closely related discipline) from an accredited institution; a focus in structural engineering is preferred.
· Professional Engineer (P. Eng) registration in BC is required; P. Eng registration in AB, ON, NB, or NS is considered an asset.
· Struct.Eng designation is also considered an asset.
· Strong understanding of the professional practice of Engineering, PPMP and requirements of EGBC to maintain firm registration.
· 5-10+ years of relevant structural engineering experience within a registered engineering firm.
· Proficiency with structural analysis tools (e.g. Jabacus, CAD, SkyCiv, ClearCalcs, STAAD.Pro).
· Strong knowledge of applicable codes (e.g. NBC, BCBC, TPIC).
· Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
· Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts effectively.
· Comfortable working independently in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
· Experience with solar PV, mounting of rooftop equipment, or energy storage is a strong asset.
· Demonstrated attention to detail and commitment to high-quality design and documentation.
· Experience leading teams or mentoring junior staff; capable of fostering cross-department collaboration.
· Passionate about solar energy and sustainability
· Eager to grow professionally and take ownership of new challenges with initiative and a strong sense of accountability

Responsibilities

· Lead Shift’s registration with EGBC as the Responsible Registrant, including the development and implementation of the Professional Practice Management Plan (PPMP), document control systems, and design review procedures.
· Lead structural analysis and design for residential, commercial, and industrial solar PV and energy storage systems.
· Lead preparation and review of construction drawings, specifications, and engineering field reports.
· Authenticate or validate designs in accordance with regulatory requirements (e.g., BCBC) and field conditions.
· Model and simulate structural performance using advanced engineering software.
· Conduct site assessments, review as-built conditions, and resolve field issues as needed.
· Provide technical guidance, mentorship and oversight to designers, EITs, and drafters.
· Stay up-to-date with applicable codes, permitting requirements, and industry standards.
· Collaborate with project stakeholders to ensure the structural scope is aligned with architectural, electrical, and operational objectives.
· Identify opportunities to standardize and scale Shift’s structural engineering practices as the organization grows.
