ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN(S)

Niagara Peninsula Energy Inc. is seeking qualified individuals to join our Engineering Department in the full-time unionized position of Engineering Technician. This exciting position reports to the Director of Engineering Services and is required to design electrical distributions systems, coordinate projects and maintain records of company assets. This position will be required to work across all of Niagara Peninsula Energy Inc. service territories.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION INCLUDE:

  • Must have completed (or be within one year of acquiring) a three (3) year Electrical Technologist Diploma and acquired a CET designation (or be capable of acquiring within three (3) years).
  • Experience in electrical distribution design is an asset.
  • Eligible for registration with OACETT and/or PEO.
  • Valid Class “G” License.
  • Previous work experience in an electric utility is an asset.
  • Proficient in G.I.S. Software, AutoCAD and MS Office software applications.

Responsibilities
  • Performs field surveying at project sites to review existing plant, plan placement of new equipment and identify potential design conflicts.
  • Applies USF, ESA & CSA standards and NPEI regulations to design electrical distribution systems and input data into G.I.S. to produce engineered drawings for construction.
  • Prepares cost estimates and material lists using a computer estimating program and issues to Manager, Procurement and Facilities to ensure all materials are in stock at time of construction.
  • Issues drawings to lines crews and contractors, and provides technical direction and continued support during project construction, to resolve issues or concerns and ensure work is completed accurately and timely. Files all relevant project documentation.
  • Liaises with external authorities including; Bell, CATV, City, Region, MTO as required, to coordinate projects.
  • Applies knowledge of IHSA Utility Work Protection Code to operate the system control centre and ensure work on distribution system is performed safely.
  • Coordinates and monitors loading on substation and distribution feeders through SCADA, troubleshoots electrical distribution system and assists operations staff during events of unplanned outages. Records system activities in daily log book, updates the system operations map and communicates planned and unplanned daily work activities and service calls to operations staff.
  • Updates GIS system with most current field information.
