This is complex technical field and office work of a civil engineering nature at the sub-professional level. The incumbent facilitates the planning of Municipal engineering projects by undertaking complex technical assignments including preparation or review of design layouts, detail drawings, specifications and related data for Municipal works in assigned fields, making field inspections and making computations. The work may include the supervision of one or more subordinates on specific projects and the incumbent may concentrate activities in a specialized field. An incumbent checks designs submitted by consultants for technical adequacy, scope of work, and conformance to Municipal standards and specifications; makes recommendations for modifications, refines drawings as necessary, reviews and checks working drawings prepared by draftsmen assigned to assist on a project and ensures completeness, accuracy and conformance to project requirements; reviews applications from utility companies to install or relocate gas, electricity, telephone or other mains, ducts or lines; ensures compliance with design and service standards as set by Engineering and Planning departments, issues approved permits; maintains liaison with utilities on all matters relating to Municipal works and conducts field inspections of work sites; prepares notes and maps as required; may supervise one or more subordinates on specific projects. Performs related work as required.
Qualifications include Diploma in Civil Engineering plus sound related experience, eligibility for registration as a Applied Science Technologist OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Sound knowledge of applicable engineering design principles, standards, methods, and mathematics; of municipal engineering practices, procedures, functions and of the rules and regulations applicable to the section’s functions; of construction methods and materials and of survey methods and procedures as related to the work performed. Working knowledge of the functions and responsibilities of various internal departments and external agencies as related to the work performed. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts and handle enquiries and provide technical information and assistance. Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia is required.
This is a temporary full time position until September 1, 2026.
