As an Engineering Workshop Technician, you will provide practical technical support and advice to a wide range of students, staff, and project activities. You will design, build, modify, maintain, and repair items of scientific research equipment and instrumentation as required by academic research within the Department of Physics. You will be responsible for maintaining and servicing equipment in the mechanical workshop and in the research labs. The successful candidate will be part of a team of researchers and other manufacturing technicians working in the areas of Experimental Quantum Optics and Photonics. Central for the role is the collaborative design and manufacture of precision mechanical components using CNC and manual lathes, mills, and other mechanical workshop machinery. Examples of the technical requirements of the research group are customised mechanical adjustment mounts for optical devices, vacuum components, and machining of laser mounts. The role involves working alongside a team of senior, junior, and trainee researchers, with collaboration in design and review stages being vital to the overall role. The work will be varied in nature but will always have a requirement for timely and professional completion and will involve engineering innovative practical solutions to facilitate the development and use of equipment for scientific research and applications.
