AoH is seeking English Language Arts (ELA) Teachers across multiple instructional levels (Levels 1–5). While our most immediate needs are at the GED-prep level (Level 4), we welcome applicants interested in supporting adult learners at any level of ELA—from early literacy to advanced high school equivalency preparation. Successful candidates will be placed at our Ward 5 Campus (Northeast DC) or Ward 8 Campus (Southeast DC) based on experience, level fit, and instructional needs. About the Role ELA Teachers at AoH support a diverse population of adult learners, including those who are: Just beginning their literacy journey, Re-engaging with education after interrupted schooling, or Preparing to complete the GED or National External Diploma Program (NEDP). Teachers design and deliver equitable instruction grounded in Universal Design for Learning (UDL), trauma-informed practices, and culturally responsive pedagogy, ensuring all learners can access, engage with, and master content in meaningful ways. Key Responsibilities Teach in-person English Language Arts and social studies courses aligned with the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adults (CCRSAE) and high school equivalency expectations (GED/NEDP). Support learners at assigned levels, which may include: Level 1 – Foundational Literacy: Letter recognition, phonemic awareness, basic decoding, high-frequency words, very simple sentences, early reading behaviors, and confidence-building around print. Level 2 – Basic Literacy: Phonics, decoding, sentence and paragraph writing, grammar, fluency, and basic reading comprehension. Level 3 – Pre-GED / Intermediate: Academic reading, structured multi-paragraph writing, grammar and mechanics, informational texts, and introductory analysis. Level 4 – GED/NEDP Readiness: Advanced reading comprehension, evidence-based writing, text analysis, argumentation, research skills, and integration of social studies content. Level 5 – Advanced / Transition to Postsecondary: GED-level reasoning through language arts, analytical writing, research projects, and academic/professional communication skills for college and career contexts. Adapt instructions to accommodate varied learning styles, skill levels, and cognitive/linguistic profiles. Integrate multisensory instructional strategies and technology tools to reinforce reading and writing skills. Develop and implement Individualized Learning Plans (ILPs) for learners with special academic needs, as appropriate. Collaborate with Student Support Services to identify learning barriers and provide accommodation. Assess learner progress through formative and summative measures and adjust instruction accordingly. Foster an inclusive classroom environment grounded in AoH’s CARES values—Community, Acceptance Respect, Empowerment, and Service. Qualifications What You Bring Education Bachelor’s degree in English, Language Arts, Literacy, Secondary Education, Special Education, Adult Education, or a related field (required). Master’s degree preferred. Experience Demonstrated experience teaching literacy or English Language Arts to adult or secondary learners. Experience supporting adults with diverse academic needs, including learners with interrupted education, diagnosed learning differences, or low literacy. Experience designing and delivering differentiated instruction in multi-level classrooms. Experience using formative assessments to guide instruction and set individualized learning goals. Prior adult-education, ABE, or GED/NEDP preparation experience is strongly preferred. Knowledge College and Career Readiness Standards for Adults (CCRSAE) and high school equivalency expectations (GED/NEDP). CASAS or other adult-education placement and progress assessment tools. Universal Design for Learning (UDL), trauma-informed practices, and culturally responsive pedagogy. Awareness of how adult learners’ lived experiences (employment, trauma, language, caregiving responsibilities) influence classroom engagement and persistence. Skills Ability to create a welcoming, structured, and responsive learning environment that motivates adult learners at all levels. Strong lesson-planning skills, with creativity in adapting materials for learners from early literacy to GED readiness. Effective classroom management that supports learner confidence, safety, and persistence. Strong communication skills—clear, empathetic, and grounded in cultural humility.
