POSITION SUMMARY:
The ELD teacher provides effective support for English language development through use of best practices for Multilingual Learner: scaffolding and sheltering content area instruction, pre-teaching key concepts, supporting reading development through use of appropriate assessment instruments, providing leveled reading group instruction, co-teaching of content based ELD instruction, and designing independent literacy activities. All instruction is tied to district and state performance standards in content areas and to the English Language Proficiency Standards. Racial equity practices are expected.
Assessment is continually used to adjust, inform, and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of an English Learner who may also be a Talented and Gifted student, and/or have an Individual Education Plan. All ELD teachers will provide parents opportunities to become involved as partners in education; will have strong collaboration and communication skills with parents and colleagues; are able to successfully team with classroom teachers to provide sheltered content instruction and English Language Development; and are able to develop effective instructional plans to be implemented by Educational Assistants, whom they will supervise. All teachers are responsible for student supervision, guidance, development and safety. All teachers follow Portland Public School policies, rules, and regulations. Excellent classroom management skills are a must.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
Incumbents must be properly licensed by the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission for assignment as a Professional Educator - Teacher. For positions identified within core academic areas, incumbents must be designated as highly qualified by the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC) to teach the designated core subjects. Core academic areas include Language Arts (English), Reading, Mathematics, Sciences, Foreign Language (except Chinese-Mandarin), Social Studies and Art.
QUALIFICATIONS:
ESOL endorsed. Experience in providing ELD instruction for Emergent Bilingual students.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bilingual/Bi-Cultural Chinese, Russian, Somali, Spanish, and Vietnamese applicants are highly desirable.
