Welcome from the Principal: Outwood Academy Bydales is an 11-16 school located in the beautiful coastal village of Marske-by-the-Sea, close to the North York Moors National Park and with spectacular views of the coastline. About the Department: The department has created a challenging and exciting KS3 curriculum with reading at its heart. To build enthusiasm for English study, the department has developed a thematic curriculum which considers topical issues and an exciting range of texts, both contemporary and canonical. Students are encouraged to be critical thinkers and thoughtful communicators. We are committed to consistently evaluating our curriculum to ensure relevance to our context and provide fresh interest for students and staff alike. There is a strong whole-school literacy strategy which aims to ensure that all students can gain the educational and personal benefits of reading.This was referenced in our recent inspection report which included the statement that “Reading is a priority for the school”.This includes reading in form time, Accelerated Reader and a variety of reading interventions for readers who are not yet proficient. A specialist literacy teaching assistant uses the Ruth Miskin phonics programme to support emergent readers.
