This is a remote position. English to Japanese - Legal Translator, Editor, and/or Transcriber (Remote) *Status: Freelance Contractor *Requirements: U.S. Citizenship Global Language Strategies, a business headquartered in the Washington, D.C. region, is currently seeking a professional freelance linguist to translate, edit, and/or transcribe legal documents from English to Japanese. This is a remote position, as needed. Job Duties: 1. Provide accurate translation, editing of documents, and/or transcription of audio files involving law enforcement and legal subject matter from English to Japanese. 2. Edit audio transcriptions that include slang and idioms. 3. Edit legal documents, such as affidavits, depositions, etc., while demonstrating a strong command of legal terminology in both English and the target language. 4. Excellent written communication skills in English and the target foreign language, with Advanced Proficiency (reading/speaking/listening, writing) level 3-plus in English and the foreign target language, as assessed by the International Language Roundtable (ILR) scale. 5. Translate, edit, and/or transcribe following the government client’s style guides and quality standards. 6. Use domain-specific terminology. 7. Review and certify other translators’ work quality, as needed. 8. Highly proficient in MS Office, with the ability to mirror source document format in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. 9. Familiar with the use of CAT tools, such as Trados Studio. ​ Requirements ***1. A U.S. citizen willing to undergo a U.S. government background check to obtain a Public Trust Clearance. 2. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. 3. At least 3 years of experience in legal documentation, translating, and/or editing between English and a foreign language. 4. At least 3 years of experience performing audio transcription with the ability to use software to enhance sound and equipment to aid in transcription. 5. Familiar with legal terminology in both English and the target foreign language(s). 6. Proficient in Microsoft Office. 7. Translators and editors must proficiently use CAT tools, such as Trados. **Preferred Qualifications: **ATA, NAJIT, or other relevant professional certification.
