As an Environmental and Hygiene Advisor you will be responsible for implementing and continually improving Calgary Transit’s environmental management system to maintain registration with the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 14001. You will be the corporate link responsible for developing, coordinating, communicating and delivering a variety of environmental management and occupational hygiene programs to meet regulatory compliance and reporting requirements, business and performance measures. Primary duties include:

  • Coordinate, communicate, and work with operational staff to deliver environmental and related occupational health programs for Calgary Transit that address potential environmental risks, liabilities and opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental and occupational health and safety regulations and industry standards that are applicable in Alberta, North American and Internationally.
  • Identify and assess operation activities and practices that pose environmental and occupational hygiene risks.
  • Evaluate the type of monitoring and assessment required and provide recommendations for the most effective and pro-active control measures.
  • Develop, coordinate and implement environmental and occupational hygiene training programs for Calgary Transit.
  • Participate in internal and external environmental management system audits and compliance audits.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A completed 2 year diploma in environmental technology or a related field such as environmental sciences, environmental health, occupational health, toxicology, chemistry or environmental engineering with at least 3 years of relevant experience with environmental systems, applications and audits OR;
  • A degree in a science related field such as environmental sciences, environmental health, occupational health, toxicology, chemistry or environmental engineering with at least 1 year of relevant experience with environmental systems, applications and audits.
  • Demonstrated experience working with ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems.
  • An intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel and Outlook).
  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s License or provincial equivalent, with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending.
  • Ability to obtain a City of Calgary operator’s permit.
  • Knowledge of urban transportation systems and the applicable environmental regulatory system will be considered an asset.
  • Experience in implementing occupational hygiene monitoring programs, including noise and air quality assessments and in delivering related training and onboarding for employees will be considered an asset.
  • Previous environmental field work experience, including experience conducting water quality sampling would be considered an asset.
  • Success in this position requires a self-motivated individual who is a strong team player and works well in a multi-disciplinary, fast-paced work environment.
  • The successful applicant must be flexible, maintain good judgement, political sensitivity, and attention to detail are essential.
