GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Environmental Center (EC) Coordinator promotes individual and population public health by providing the essential services of public health within a variety of settings. Responsibilities include: standardization of BCHD Food Program; assist with food program staff trainings and annual food workshops; literature research and review; inspecting properties, businesses or homes; collecting samples; identifying health and environmental hazards, assists in food-, water-, and vector-born illness outbreak investigations; providing community health education and health promotion activities; ensuring compliance with a broad range of current local health and environmental codes, regulations and policies; participating in multi-faceted health or environmental projects; providing technical assistance and information to individuals, families and groups regarding public health and environmental issues; and pre-emergency planning, emergency response activities, and post-emergency functions. This position requires knowledge of public health and environmental science.

EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science (B.S.) related to the field of Public Health, Environmental Health, Sanitary Science, Sanitary Engineering, or other related environmental health field, from a four-year college or university with a minimum of 30 credit hours in basic sciences with at least three (3) hours in each of the following areas: physical sciences, chemical sciences, biological sciences, and math.
  • Other education may be acceptable as allowed by the LEHP/REHS licensure requirements.
  • Required: Licensed Environmental Health Practitioner licensure (LEHP) and/or equivalent. Certified Food Protection Manager Certification (CFPM) within 90 days of employment without LEHP and/or equivalent.
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in Public Health, Environmental Sciences, or related field.
  • 2 years’ experience as an Environmental Health Practitioner or equivalent preferred.
  • Bilingual candidates in Spanish/English preferred.
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS)/Incident Command System (ICS) 100, 200, 700.a and 800 certifications within four (4) months of employment.
  • Valid Illinois driver’s license, current certificate of vehicle insurance, and access to reliable transportation to all assigned work locations.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under general supervision and/or as part of various workgroups and teams and oversees programmatic operations, the EC Coordinator performs the following functions within the framework of BCHD’s provision of the core functions and essential services of public health.

OTHER DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Maintains, updates and uses computerized data management systems.
  • Performs public health emergency response duties as assigned and consistent with training provided and job classification, in response to threats to the public’s health.
  • Participates in Department and community emergency response training and drills consistent with job classification in support of public health emergency and disaster preparedness.
  • Assumes responsibility for own professional growth and development by pursuing education, participating in professional committees and work groups and contributing to a work environment where continual improvements in practice are pursued. Receives in-service training and ensures LEHP continuing education unit (CEU) requirements are met as required. Assists and fills in for the Health Inspector/Sanitarian(s) as needed.
  • This position will be responsible for implementing quality improvement (QI) and performance management (PM) processes and/or techniques to improve the effectiveness of the respective public health program. This includes, but is not limited to: creating. Implementing, and evaluating performance standards and identifying, implementing, and assessing program quality improvement processes.
  • Co-leads all Environmental Center meetings with staff.
  • Participates in regional and/or state environmental health meetings.
  • Trains new staff to carry out program components to meet grant deliverables. Training existing staff on program changes and updates.
  • Assists the Management Team in preparing 90-day and annual reviews for corresponding staff.
  • Assists the Management Team with programmatic changes, program development and grant writing as needed.
  • Attends Board of Health Meetings as necessary and prepare to present regarding programs and/or PHAB Re-Accreditation.
  • Participates in department and community emergency response training consistent with job classification in support of Public Health emergency and disaster preparedness, such as National Incident Management System (NIMS)/Incident Command System (ICS) certification.
  • Assumes responsibility for own professional growth and development by pursuing continuous improvements in education and training.
  • Maintains and securing specific equipment and supplies.
  • Provides back up for other professional staff as necessary.
  • Works evening and weekend hours when required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned consistent with job classification.
