QUALIFICATIONS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Proven experience as safety coordinator of similar position.
  • Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or NCSO
  • In-depth knowledge of OSH guidelines and practices.
  • Experience in reporting and developing policies.
  • Experience in implementing OSH training programs.
  • (CHSC) or (CRSP) designation considered an asset
  • Disability Management and or Return to Work certification/designations preferred.
  • Knowledge of potentially hazardous materials and practices.
  • Proficient in MS Office, including MSWord and Excel.
  • Familiarity with conducting data analysis and reporting statistics.
  • Working knowledge of safety management information system an asset.
  • Outstanding communication skills with the ability to present and explain health and safety topics.
  • Considerable knowledge of the Human Rights Code and the Workers Compensation Act and Regulations.
  • Considerable understanding of the principles regarding an employer’s responsibility in terms of OH&S, disability claims management, return to work and accommodation.
  • Sound judgement and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to analyze business needs and think strategically.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Excellent ability to present viewpoints and ideas effectively in both written and oral form.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of integrity and professionalism.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Associate Degree in environmental, safety, industrial hygiene, or related field, preferred.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in environmental, safety, industrial hygiene, or related field, preferred.
  • Occupational Health and Safety Technician (OHST) Certification or equivalent, required.
  • Three to five (3-5) years of Safety experience (e.g., administration of site-based OSHA programs), required.
  • 1-3 years supervisory experience, required.
  • Preference given to those with an Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree.

Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the development of OSH policies and programs.
  • Record keeping of safety related incidents and proposed corrective actions.
  • Record keeping of all hazardous materials following WHIMS procedures.
  • Advise and instruct on various safety-related topics (noise levels, use of machinery etc.).
  • Conduct risk assessment and enforce preventative measures.
  • Review existing policies and procedures and update according to current legislation.
  • Direct accident investigation procedures.
  • Conduct safety and toolbox meetings.
  • Record and investigate workplace incidents to determine causes and preparation of Worker’s Compensation Board (WCB) incident forms.
  • Reporting to and working with WCB.
  • Develop rehabilitation plans, which includes planning and participating in establishing a graduated return to work program and other activities required to determine the capabilities of workers with both occupational and non-occupational causes.
  • Responsible to work with management for all appeals dealing with WorkSafe BC issues such as claims, compliance orders, penalties, assessments, and similar issues.
  • Manage the functioning of the health and safety program, including administering the budget, maintaining applicable documentation, establishing performance measures, and analyzing and reporting on health and safety program results and trends.
  • Regularly visit all job sites and identify areas for improvement.
  • Act as both a resource and mentor to site safety staff.
  • Work collaboratively with Management in the practical application of the OHS Program.
  • Promote occupational health and safety awareness throughout assigned facilities.
  • Conduct or oversee ongoing safety inspections of facilities, operations, and equipment to ensure compliance and safe working environment for associates. Monitor and enforce compliance to regulatory and company requirements
  • Ensure all necessary HSE Training is completed by all site associates. This includes new hire safety training and all other on-site HSE training required for both hourly and management associates.
  • Review and update all Job Safety Analysis’ (JSA) for each role within assigned site
  • Identify improvement opportunities and put forth solutions/recommendations to continually support site improvement.
  • Actively participate on assigned teams and/or projects, including site Health & Safety Committee and process improvement initiatives.
