Environmental Health Officer - OR6481

Your Duties:
- Carry out enforcement, investigative, educational, and advisory duties associated with the responsibilities of any area of work assigned.
- Actively participate in and progress through a structured development programme to build professional experience and competence.
- Liaise proactively with public, private, voluntary, and community organisations to enhance the achievement of service and unit objectives.
- Undertake project work as directed by the Principal Environmental Health Officer, Assistant City Protection Manager, or Senior Environmental Health Officer.
- Organise personal daily work demands to ensure all relevant targets are achieved.
- Provide reports, records, and statistical information as required.
- Keep informed of all new developments within the assigned area through continuing professional development.
- Make suggestions for the improvement of work practices and services.
- Participate in the training and mentoring of students and others assigned for training or work experience.
- Work occasionally outside normal office hours, including providing cover for out-of-hours services such as the noise service.
- Motivate and manage any assigned staff to ensure effective service delivery, including responsibility for staff training and development programmes.
- Participate in council induction, in-service training, and other human resource management procedures (e.g., absence management, disciplinary, grievance).
- Assist in recruitment and selection processes as directed.
- Act in accordance with the council’s policies including customer care, equal opportunities, health and safety, and safeguarding.
- Undertake duties in a way that enhances and protects the reputation of Belfast City Council.
- Perform other relevant duties as may be required.
Your Profile:
- Possess a full, current driving licence which enables driving in Northern Ireland and have access to a car for official business (reasonable adjustments may be considered for applicants with disabilities).
- Hold a Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degree in Environmental Health (approved by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health) or equivalent qualification, such as a Diploma in Environmental Health awarded by the CIEH.
- Hold either a Certificate of Registration with the Environmental Health Officers’ Registration Board (EHORB) or be a Registered Environmental Health Practitioner (EHP) with the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (or be willing to complete the registration process within 18 months of appointment).
- For EHO (Port Health) roles, must be qualified as Official Fishery Inspectors or be prepared to complete practical training and the Food Standards Agency course within three months of appointment.

Belfast City Council reserves the right to shortlist applicants based on:
- Current registration with EHORB or CIEH as a Registered Environmental Health Practitioner.
- At least one year’s relevant experience working as an Environmental Health Officer or in a similar role.
- At least two years’ relevant experience working as an Environmental Health Officer or in a similar role.
