EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor of Technology in Environmental Health degree, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Must be certified as a Public Health Inspector in Canada (CPHI(C)).
  • Must possess a valid BC Driver’s License as travel within Vancouver Coastal Health requires the use of a personal vehicle.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Ability to conduct through inspections and investigations using a risk-based approach.
  • Ability to determine compliance or corrective action in the inspection of public facilities.
  • Ability to apply critical thinking and problem solving techniques.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret test and inspection results. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, including speaking in public and preparing reports.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to work independently under limited supervision in a geographic area, and to organize and prioritize work.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex technical documents, such as legislative acts and regulations, architectural and engineered plans, and chemical and bacteriological laboratory reports.
  • Ability to enforce acts and regulations and to issue violation tickets in a calm, firm, and consistent manner under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to operate related equipment such as sampling equipment and recorders.
  • Ability to use a wide variety of related computer software applications.
  • Ability to teach in a group environment.
  • General knowledge of Trauma Informed Practice and Harm Reduction approaches and Strengths-based care.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote Indigenous Cultural Safety.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide competent and culturally safe care in a variety of settings and with diverse populations.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.

    As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers working in publicly-funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks.
