Position Description :
Serco is currently seeking an Environmental Laboratory Scientist/Chemist. Recent college graduates will be considered. This is an exciting opportunity that involves laboratory testing and support for environmental samples. The Chemist I will assist with the performance of established chemical analyses, instrument calibrations and maintenance, and data interpretation and validation.
Serco supports the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) where every day is Earth Day. Our skilled scientists collaborate with EPA staff at their state-of-the-art Laboratory Services and Applied Science Division (LSASD) in Athens Georgia. Here you’ll be part of the Environmental Service Assistance Team helping the EPA achieve their mission to protect human health and the environment.

ADDITIONAL DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • 2 years of experience as an analytical chemist, or laboratory technician preferable but not required. However, recent college graduates will be considered.
  • Successful applicant will need to have good attention to detail and be able to document all sampling meticulously (training will be provided as to requirements).
  • Excellent cross-functional team leadership and participation skills
  • Knowledge of chemical families and compatibilities.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as a member of a team.
  • Strong multi-tasking skills: Must be able to perform operations simultaneously and must be able to switch from task to task upon demand.

Responsibilities
  • Primarily conduct metals digestion and analysis utilizing EPA methods.
  • Primarily conduct organic extractions utilizing EPA methods.
  • Perform hazardous waste disposal for laboratories.
  • Demonstrate proper cleaning techniques for work area, instrumentation, and equipment.
  • May also perform TDS/TSS, TOC, % solids and other analyses utilizing EPA methods.
  • May also perform TCLP sample preparation using EPA methods.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate instruments.
  • Prepare reagents and samples to be used in performing assays.
  • Interpret and evaluate data and upload results to Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for a final report.
  • Perform secondary review on the organic and inorganic analytical data to ensure completeness and integrity of results.
  • Perform sample disposal and Laboratory clean ups for GLP practice.
  • Monitor workflow for incoming samples and manage backlog and due dates.
  • Manage general laboratory operations and functions, including monitoring and requesting supplies and materials to maintain lab supply inventory.
  • Track inventory of supplies and reagents to ensure no interruption of workflow.
  • Communicate effectively with EPA staff.
