Responsibilities

YOUR NEW ROLE:

The Environmental Manager will lead the development, implementation, and oversight of Sullivans environmental standards, policies, procedures, and programs to ensure regulatory compliance with all municipal, provincial, and federal regulations. Key responsibilities include conducting site inspections, providing training, managing environmental risks, and promoting sustainability initiatives across the company’s construction projects. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership capabilities, a thorough understanding of environmental laws, and the ability to collaborate effectively with project teams to ensure responsible construction practices.
This is a full-time, permanent position based in our Arnprior, ON office. The role will involve on-site visits across Eastern and Northern Ontario as required.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

While the Environmental Manager is responsible for a multitude of duties, the main functions include:

Leadership & Management

  • Refine and implement Sullivans environmental systems, policies and procedures in alignment with regulatory requirements and ISO 14001 standards.
  • Further develop Sullivans environmental sustainability standards, initiatives, and targets.
  • Ensure adherence to all applicable environmental laws, regulations, and permits for construction activities.
  • Collaborate with senior management to assess performance against corporate sustainability objectives, identifying gaps and drive continuous improvement.
  • Promote sustainable construction practices through environmental initiatives and programs.
  • Manage approvals and reporting requirements, acting as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies, clients, and partners.

Operations

  • Permitting & Approvals - Provide guidance on required permits and approvals, managing the permitting process, and maintaining compliance with municipal, provincial, and federal regulations.
  • Lead Site Compliance - Develop and manage environmental compliance plans, including regulatory reporting, monitoring programs, to ensure responsible construction practices including:
  • Site specific environmental management plan
  • Sediment and erosion control plan
  • Ensure compliance to Excess Soil Regulation (O. Reg. 406/19)
  • Contaminated soil management plan
  • Dewatering plan
  • Air/water monitoring plan
  • Project site inspections and audits
  • Waste management plan
  • Incident Response - Develop and oversee emergency response plans for environmental incidents, collaborating with teams to ensure preparedness.
  • Track and analyze environmental metrics (e.g., waste diversion rates, fuel usage, incident trends), reporting findings to senior leadership.
  • Training and Awareness - Develop and deliver environmental training programs for employees, subcontractors, and site personnel. Promoting a culture of environmental responsibility throughout the company.

Pursuit

  • Lead environmental sections of proposals, including tailoring environmental sections of proposals for specific client requirements.
  • Lead engagement through formal Environment Committees, collaborating with Indigenous Partners on environmental topics, permitting, and community support.
  • Foster stakeholder relationships with key clients, external regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders, including further developing the use OPG’s EcoVadis program and CNL Sustainability Report.
  • Work with senior management to identify communication opportunities and represent Sullivans with clients and in public forums to enhance trust and transparency.
