We’re hiring an Environmental Monitor / Junior Environmental Professional based in Prince Rupert, BC to join our team at Gitxaala Environmental Services.
Gitxaala Environmental Services (GES) is active in major energy and port development projects in Northwest British Columbia. We are recruiting to meet demand for a local and trained workforce to service the growing needs of clients in northwest BC.
A convergence of industries in the expanding port city of Prince Rupert sets the stage for the successful candidate to work with a diverse range of clients, our partners, and their contractors across multiple natural resource and infrastructure sectors.

This position comes with responsibility for environmental monitoring, data collection, calibration and use of field equipment, and a significant amount of field work and travel.
As such, we are looking for candidates with a technical diploma or B.Sc. in biology, environmental sciences or another relevant field or a certificate in environmental monitoring alongside relevant past work experience, training, and interest in the field. Eligibility for registration with a processional association would be an asset.
We are also looking for someone with strong verbal and written communication skills, excellent data literacy, and a positive attitude towards health and safety system implementation. See the full list of qualifications for this position below.
This is a full-time, permanent position with 40 hours of work per week and a wage of $27.50 to $35/hr commensurate with experience. Field work will include overtime (1.5x rate) and weekend work.

QUALIFICATIONS

• B.Sc. or technical diploma in biology, environmental science or other relevant field OR a certificate in environmental monitoring.
• Candidates with Environmental Monitoring training / certification may apply who are capable of demonstrating relevant past work experience, training, and interest in the environmental field;
• Eligibility for registration (in training) with a professional association such as the BC College of Applied Biology, BC Institute of Agrologists, etc. is considered an asset but not a requirement;
• Committed to undertaking training to further skills in environmental monitoring and assessments;
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
• Experience with MS Office applications and GIS considered an asset;
• Experienced and/or interest in sampling of various environmental media;
• Experience and/or interest in riparian assessments, stream classification, and/or archaeological monitoring considered an asset;
• rone pilot license, SVOP, MED-A3/SVD-BS, ROC-M considered strong assets.
• Positive attitude towards implementing health and safety systems. Level 1 First Aid, H2S Awareness/Alive, etc. considered an asset;
• Willingness to travel for work; and
• Access to a personal vehicle and have a valid BC class 5 driver’s license.

• Environmental monitoring including performing marine mammal observation, hydroacoustic monitoring, surface water, groundwater, soil, and/or sediment sampling, bird nest sweeps, fish and/or amphibian salvage;
• Carrying out field work in support of environmental, habitat monitoring, and archaeological studies;
• Collection of baseline biophysical data in marine, terrestrial, and aquatic environments as part of project Environmental Assessments and/or related monitoring;
• Calibration, maintenance, and use of field instrumentation and equipment including GPS, water quality probes, dataloggers, etc.;
• Demonstrating attention to detail in completing administrative, Health and Safety, and field documentation;
• Adherence to company and client Health and Safety, Quality Assurance / Quality Control, and Drug and Alcohol (incl. testing) policies and programs;
• Travel to remote work locations (including by boat or helicopter) and ability to work out of camps and perform night shift monitoring; and
• Working collaboratively and constructively with a variety of clients, co-workers, and contractors in a team-oriented setting.
