Description

The Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center at the University of Mount Union seeks a motivated individual to lead and coordinate environmental or science (broadly) education outreach, with a focus on high-school programs that support recruitment of high achieving students to the University of Mount Union. The successful candidate will engage local high-school students and teachers in experiential learning and research experiences at the Nature Center and provide training for high school teachers that can be applied in the classroom. The coordinator may also explore opportunities for high school research and training programs for exceptional students during the summer between their junior and senior years.
The successful candidate will work in collaboration with the Department of Biology and Environmental Science and a liaison in the Office of Admissions to set goals to enhance recruitment and ensure a holistic approach to student development from matriculation to graduation, and beyond. Additional duties include coordinating and assisting University instruction at the Nature Center, scheduling and assisting with field trips and labs, promoting use of the Nature Center for teaching University academic programs, and providing outreach to student groups about environmental learning opportunities at the Nature Center. The coordinator will also develop an academic plan for the HBNC that outlines goals, learning outcomes, and priorities to enhance instructional efforts aimed toward existing UMU students.

Responsibilities

  • Develop environmental learning and/or science programs for high-school students and teachers
  • Collaborate with enrollment/recruitment staff at UMU to develop recruitment goals and develop plans to meet and assess progress toward attaining these goals
  • Develop and implement environmental and/or science workshops
  • Travel to schools, conferences, workshops to present environmental/science learning opportunities at the Nature Center
  • Responsible for planning and implementing outreach opportunities for high school students and teachers at the Nature Center and coordinating with the Office of Admissions to include campus visits for high school classes.
  • Maintain an effective working relationship with other University offices and departments that participate in recruiting efforts and outreach.
  • Assist in the development of materials for recruitment and outreach including content for the website, social media, newsletters, brochures, etc.
  • Organize and facilitate University labs and field trips to the Nature Center
  • Assist with driving 12-passenger vans during course field trips from campus to the Nature Center (University approved MVR required prior to driving university vehicles)
  • Participate in the development and delivery of Nature Center orientation programs for new and existing UMU students.
  • Staff HBNC facilities on weekends as needed.
  • Maintain positive visitor relations including greeting and answering questions.
  • Collaborate with existing Nature Center staff by:
  • Assisting in facilitating Nature Center activities, programs, and events
  • Attending staff meetings
  • Helping with volunteer programming
  • Assisting with maintenance and care of facilities and farm animals as needed
  • Other job duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements: B.S. in Environmental Science, Education or similar field; Previous experience with environmental/science education, high school teaching/curriculum development and/or volunteer/community programs all considered desirable.
Preferred Qualifications: M.S. degree in environmental science, education or related field; 3 or more years of teaching experience; and/or previous experience working in environmental education at a nature center.

  • Organize multiple projects and carry out required project details.
  • Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
  • Ability to work irregular hours, including weekends and occasional evenings.
  • A valid OH driver’s license and reliable transportation to and from work.
  • Fingerprinting for a background check will be required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Director of Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center.
    Job Type: Full-time
    Pay: $1.00 per hour
    Expected hours: 40 – 50 per week
