OVERVIEW

We are seeking an Environmental Specialist I to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a Batchelor’s degree in environmental science and engineering, biology, chemistry or microbiology. This is an entry level temporary position in our Onsite Wastewater Treatment Program but is ideal for anyone looking to work outdoors most of the time, needing experience or is interested in becoming a Certified Environmental Health Professional in Florida.

SKILLS

  • Highly organized to ensure program is effective in ensuring compliance with regulations; ability to use computers for data entry, People First, Re Host (Environmental Health Database), Outlook, Time Coding (EARS), Basic Computer Skills, MS Word
  • Licensure/registration/certification requirements: Environmental Health Professional Certification required in the Septic Program per Chapter 64E-18, F.A.C. within six months of hire, as a condition of your employment.
  • Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural. The incumbent must have a valid Florida divers license and access to a personal vehicle.
  • This position requires a Bachelor of Science and 30 hours of physical science PRIOR to applying for the position. Also requires physical ability to perform field duties including soil auger, transit, lifting, difficult terrain and any other physical activity required for the OSTDS program. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for site evaluations, plan review, permitting, inspections, re-inspections and violation enforcement of onsite sewage treatment and disposal systems to ensure compliance with Chapter 64E-6 of the Florida Administrative Code (F.A.C.) and site evaluations must also comply with State Health Office memos 05-014 and 06-003. This would include consultation with professional engineers, contractors, installers, clients and the general public in applicable matters. This would also include maintaining contact and coordination of activities with other concerned agencies such as the Department of Environmental Protection or Orange County Environmental Protection Department when necessary. Incumbent must have a valid FL driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle in order to carry out inspections within Orange County.
  • Conducts compliance inspections in assigned area for Industrial/Manufacturing, Commercial and Aerobic Treatment Unit (ATU) operating permits to ensure system, site conditions, facility and all associated paperwork are in compliance.
  • Complete and return all paperwork pertaining to job duties legibly and in proper order. This would also include timely submittal of timesheets, mileage and EARS.
  • Investigate all nuisance complaints assigned by supervisor and follow up as necessary.
  • Performs all other duties as required. Maintains confidentiality and security of records as specified by department regulations and laws.
