As the Environmental Reclamation Student, you will actively monitor reclamation operations and conduct field surveys, utilizing cutting-edge electronic data collection methods. Moreover, you will collaborate with the Environment team, supporting them in the monitoring of wildlife, surface and ground water, and the eradication of noxious weeds. This position primarily focuses on fieldwork, providing you with valuable hands-on experience.

  • Job location: Fort McMurray, AB – Horizon or Albian Oil Sands Site
  • Shift schedule: 4 days on, 3 days off, 10 hours/day (Monday – Thursday)
  • Term lengths: 4 or 8 months
  • Term start: May 2026

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Collect soil samples and monitor reclamation placement data utilizing electronic data collection methods
  • Survey reclamation areas and areas of disturbance for required tracking
  • Collect pre-soil salvage survey (ground truthing) data and interpret results
  • Collect vegetation data on previously revegetated reclamation areas
  • Monitor revegetation activities such as seeding, tree/shrub planting
  • Assist Reclamation Coordinators in the preparation and organization of soils and vegetation data for annual and quarterly reporting
  • Utilize ArcGIS remote applications such as Field Maps and Survey 123
  • Establish control of noxious weeds via weed monitoring and removal
  • Ensure the adherence to safety regulations both for yourself and your team members
  • Assist in wetland monitoring activities
  • Assist in surface water and ground water monitoring activities
  • Assist in collection of wildlife fieldwork data, may include downloading wildlife cameras
  • Assist with the generation of supporting data and forms for regulatory application submissions, reports, and publications
Responsibilities
  • Currently enrolled in your 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year undergraduate or master’s program in Land Reclamation, Forestry, Environmental, Biology, or Natural Science
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license with clean drivers abstract
  • Physically able to handle the rigors of field work with long days
  • Previous experience in completing reclamation field work is an asset
  • Previous ATV and/or watercraft experience considered an asset
  • Experience using ArcGIS collector considered an asset
  • Previous reclamation or oil sands experience considered an asset
