SUMMARY:

Aligned with the founding purpose at Traditional Medicinals, the Environmental Sustainability Manager serves as the subject matter expert to departments across the organization on carbon emissions, energy use, supply chain sustainability, circular packaging, biodiversity, water use, sustainable building design, and ESG reporting. This individual is responsible for driving organizational alignment through sustainability-focused project management to define goals, targets, and metrics to measure and report progress.
This position reports to the Sr Manager, Impact & Engagement with project and advisory work supporting Directors and ELT members across all departments.

WORKING LOCATION REQUIREMENTS:

This position is based in Rohnert Park, CA. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 - 5:00 pm. This is a hybrid role offering the flexibility to occasionally work remotely. Expected in-offices days are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Subject to change.

Responsibilities

Project Leadership

  • Steer implementation of TM’s Climate Action Plan (Carbon, Biodiversity, and Water) cross-functionally, including:
  • delivering technical solutions, timelines, and implementation strategies for reducing scopes 1-3 greenhouse gas emissions
  • developing KPIs and recommendations for reducing water use and implementing nature-based conservation initiatives across the value chain
  • enhance internal decision-making processes with integration of environmental impact considerations (Product Innovation, Product Reformulation, Packaging Decisions, New Facilities, Facilities Management, Sourcing, Agricultural Practices, etc.)

Reporting & Analysis

  • Advance maturity of company sustainability and social impact strategy, including assessment of relevant frameworks (e.g., GRI, TCFD) and best practices
  • Expand reports, dashboards and metrics which distill complex data into actionable insights
  • Manage execution of reporting requirements such as B Corp, TRUE Zero Waste, and Science-Based Targets (SBTi)
  • Oversee supply chain sustainability assessments – packaging, transportation, herb sourcing, farm-level impact, life cycle assessments, risk analysis, etc.
  • Guide Sustainability and Social Impact Analyst to execute data collection, aggregation and submission

Green Facilities

  • Lead on facilities-level sustainability certifications (e.g. California Green Business, Green Globes)
  • Drive continued compliance and improvements to our TRUEZero Waste certification at existing and future production facilities

Innovation

  • Research and lead adoption of tools for assessment of sustainability solutions (e.g. Trayak LCA, HowGood LATIS, Stage Gate 0 Impact Assessment, Packaging Decision Scorecard, etc.)
  • Collaborate with the supply chain group to assess sustainability of new sourcing decisions and ongoing support for environmentally preferred suppliers.
  • Monitor and evaluate external trends and competitor landscape for insights to inform ongoing strategy development to maintain industry leadership.

Thought Leadership

  • Work with the Communications team to deliver streamlined messaging for external sharing of TM’s environmental impact and sustainability initiatives.
  • Foster relationships with strategic partners (e.g. non-profits, collaborative groups)
  • Represent the organization through industry conferences, webinars, podcasts, etc. as needed
  • Engage in pre-competitive collaborations to advance the industry and maintain TM’s reputation as a leader in sustainable business practices
