Under the direction of the Supervisor of Environmental Monitoring and Reporting, the Environmental Technologist assists in evaluating safety and environmental conditions. The Environmental Technologist initiates protective measures, as required, at 33 closed and 1 active landfill, as well as adjoining lands specifically related to landfill gas and liquids, surface water, and groundwater.

As the Environmental Technologist, you will:

• Monitor environmental conditions at and around landfills.
• Monitor buildings, underground structures, detection and ventilation systems.
• Document and maintain data and perform database management.
• Assist the Supervisor of Environmental Monitoring, as required.
• Participate in the City of Winnipeg contract procurement process, as required.

YOUR EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:

• Graduate of a Civil Technology Program from a recognized Institute of Technology and eligible for membership in C.T.T.A.M. (Certified Technicians & Technologists Association of Manitoba) as a Municipal or Environmental, Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.)
• A minimum of 5 years’ experience relevant to the requirements of this position.
• Experience in applying engineering principles required to perform the duties including soil mechanics, hydrogeology and statistical analysis.
• Experience with Windows based applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Mapping or Database applications and other applications as required.
• Experience interpreting technical drawings, specifications and contract documents.
• Experience with maintaining positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the public, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Standard.
• Ability to plan, carry out and report on work with a minimum of supervision.
• Knowledge of small engines, generators, pumps, and pumping systems.
• Mechanical aptitude in the use of tools and the maintenance of equipment.
• Ability to organize and plan effectively, and set priorities and goals.
