Responsibilities & Qualifications:
The Novelis Environmental Health and Safety team, located in Bay Minette, AL is seeking an Environmental Water Engineer. This role is responsible for managing water systems with a focus on environmental stewardship and regulatory compliance in an aluminum recycling plant. This role ensures that water usage, treatment, and discharge align with environmental standards and sustainability goals, while supporting operational efficiency and risk mitigation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • Strong understanding of water treatment technologies and environmental regulations.
  • Experience with environmental reporting tools and SCADA systems.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3-5+ years experience in industrial water systems and environmental compliance, preferably in metals or recycling industries.
Responsibilities
  • Ensure facility compliance with water-related environmental regulations (NPDES, Clean Water Act, ADEM and NBU discharge permits)
  • Prepare and submit environmental reports, including water quality data, discharge monitoring reports (DMRs), and permit renewals.
  • Lead environmental audits and inspections related to water systems.
  • Monitor and manage water treatment process and control contaminants such as oils, suspended solids, heavy metals, and pH levels.
  • Oversee sampling, testing, and analysis of influent, effluent, and stormwater.
  • Maintain and calibrate water monitoring equipment and ensure accurate data collection.
  • Develop and implement water conservation strategies, including reuse and recycling of process water.
  • Support corporate sustainability initiatives by tracking water usage and identifying reduction opportunities.
  • Collaborate with operations and EHS teams to integrate water stewardship into daily practices.
  • Identify and mitigate environmental risks related to water systems including spills and unauthorized discharges.
  • Develop and maintain spill prevention and response plans.
  • Train staff on water-related environmental procedures and emergency protocols.
  • Lead water-related environmental projects, such as system upgrades or new treatment technologies.
  • Coordinate with internal partners, consultants, and regulatory agencies.
  • Provide technical guidance during facility expansions or process changes impacting water systems.
