Description
The Department of Surgery in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The Equity, Quality, Innovation and Safety (EQuIS) research platform focuses on surgical safety in pediatric and adult patients. Its mission is to improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of surgical care provided to patients in Calgary, Canada, and internationally. The team is based at the University of Calgary and operates from the Alberta Children’s Hospital in the Calgary zone of Alberta Health Services (AHS). EQuIS represents a diverse group of clinical researchers and is partnered with both local, national, and international organizations dedicated to healthcare quality improvement.
The EQuIS Research Assistant will be reporting to and receiving direction on their project(s) from the EQuIS Manager and the PI.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Preparation of applications for REB review, database maintenance, data collection and analysis (qualitative and quantitative)
  • Drafting of manuscripts for publication, assisting with grant proposals, and preparing reports for presentation
  • Generate various reports as required by the PI, Manager and research team. May require presentation of reports to various stakeholders
  • Assists with qualitative and quantitative data collection
  • Process data using statistical software to conduct basic analyses of trends in support of the research project
  • Compile tables, charts, graphs, and summarized statistics for integration in research papers and reports. This includes materials for presentation and publication
  • Provide support for EQuIS event planning
  • Establishes and maintains effective, productive relationships with the EQuIS research team and collaborators
  • Manages own time effectively and ensures the EQuIS Manager and PI are kept informed of activities and progress of work

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a health-related field
  • Experience working in the clinical setting; pediatrics research experience is preferred
  • Experience conducting quantitative and qualitative clinical research
  • Familiarity with statistical software programs (eg. SAS, SPSS) and NVivo qualitative data analysis software is desirable
  • Experience working with and maintaining national databases and registries
  • Experience working with REDCap is an asset
  • Familiarity with the AHS EMR system is desirable
  • Knowledge of the EQuIS research platform is an asset
  • Experience working with rural populations is an asset
  • Experience working with Indigenous people and/or racialized populations is a significant asset
  • Demonstrated ability to work with equity-deserving populations is a significant asset
  • Excellent scientific writing and communication skills
  • Detail oriented
  • A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are critical to success
  • The desire to grow and develop research skillsets is critical to success
  • Ability to demonstrate tact and courtesy when dealing with patient families, physicians and other team members
  • Ability to communicate well with external collaborators within a complex research program
  • Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality of patient records
