The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) student society, and works to improve the academic, social and personal lives of the 56,000 UBC students at its Vancouver campus. The AMS also runs nine food and beverage outlets, a catering and conference operation, and the AMS Student Nest, providing on-campus employment opportunities and generating revenue that goes directly back into supporting the students at UBC.
Position title: Equity and Inclusion Lead
Reports to: AMS President
Employee status: Hourly Exempt, Appointed
Length of term: September 1, 2025 – April 30, 2026
Hours per week: 20 hours per week
Compensation: $20.00 per hour
Position Purpose
The Equity and Inclusion Lead is responsible for coordinating, supporting, and advocating for equity and inclusion practices within the AMS. This position will lead implementation, coordination, and review of the AMS Equity Action Plan and related policies across the organization in partnership with affected groups, external consultants, and AMS Council. This position will also be responsible for conducting research related to equity and inclusion, as well as coordinating and executing relevant campaigns, consultations, and communications. The position will work collaboratively with all AMS Executives and across the AMS to support equity initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with the AMS President on issues and initiatives relating to equity and inclusion.
  • Work with marginalized student communities on campus, external consultants, and AMS leadership to implement the AMS Equity Plan.
  • Collaborate across all AMS departments, with permanent and student staff, to develop and support actionable implementation strategies for the Equity Action Plan, set up measurable metrics, and support reporting back processes on progress to AMS leadership.
  • Maintain active channels of communication with various student communities, especially those that support and advocate for marginalized communities; the AMS Resource Groups in particular.
  • Plan and help facilitate events which foster intercultural and equity fluency throughout a variety of student groups on campus.
  • Provide support to AMS staff, clubs, services, resource groups, and members on issues relating to equity and inclusion.
  • Coordinate, engage, and consult with student groups on campus, especially marginalized communities, to create and inform plans, advocacy, and events through an equity and inclusion lens.
  • Research, review, and write policies, statements, and briefing papers on issues related to EDI initiatives.
  • Participate in and lead the Constituency Equity Caucus. Implement and lead any initiatives that extend from the Caucus.
  • Attend meetings on behalf of the President as required.
  • Sit on related UBC and AMS committees and working groups at the request of the President.
  • Support the President in preparing and delivering presentations, reports, or proposals to AMS Council, Constituencies, and other key stakeholders.
  • Uphold the AMS’s mission, values, constitution, and Strategic Plan.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Must have experience as part of one of the following at a minimum:
  • Served as an executive or AMS representative of an AMS Constituency or
  • Served as a direct deputy to an AMS Constituency executive (i.e. AVP) or led a Constituency equity portfolio (i.e. EDI Chair, BIPOC Coordinator, etc.) or
  • Served as an executive or led an equity portfolio in an AMS Resource Group that offers direct support and advocacy for equity-seeking communities.
  • Must be a registered student at UBC Vancouver or one of its affiliated colleges.
  • Interest in student issues and advocacy, specifically related to equity and inclusion.
  • Involved in various relevant student communities at UBC and have an awareness of student issues and equity work ongoing at the university.
  • Able to execute tasks quickly and efficiently.
  • Education and/or experience in working on equity and inclusion is required.
  • Strong independent worker, self-motivated and goal oriented.
  • Able to research and write high quality policies, research papers, briefing notes, and other communications.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to take direction and manage time appropriately.
  • Experience in community organizing with various campus groups is an asset.
  • Experience in policy development and/or planning and strategic planning is an asset.
  • Conflict management skills are an asset.
  • Previous research experience is an asset.
