Description

HOW WILL YOU CONTRIBUTE?

As part of a new phase of growth for ESRIC, supported by the FNR CORE programme in the project “Uncovering The Origin Of Astromaterials By Laser Spectroscopy With Automated Mineralogy - SkyLight”, we are seeking a Research & Technology (R&T) Scientist or Engineer to join our dynamic team. Specific areas of activity currently in ESRIC include resource characterisation, beneficiation and production of water, oxygen and metals from lunar regolith. You will be a part of the team focusing on systems related to space resources characterization and exploration. As part of ESRIC’s continued growth, you will help to build ESRIC’s capabilities in Laser-induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) and its application to the chemical analysis of astromaterials. You will use LIBS to understand, improve and optimise astromaterials characterization, including astromaterials simulants and meteorite samples, both under variable atmospheric conditions and vacuum. Emphasis will be on the data analysis, calibration and processing of large LIBS datasets using machine learning approaches.
The output will be used to develop novel concepts for the application of LIBS in space resources exploration in collaboration with other researchers. You will analyse data and disseminate your results in peer-reviewed journal articles and conference presentations.
As postdoctoral researcher, you will carry out your own research in LIBS analysis and data processing, while supporting the research effort across ESRIC in line with our mission to become a world leading centre of excellence in space resources.

Your mission includes:

  • The setup of an experimental LIBS system in ESRIC’s laboratory aiming at astromaterials LIBS analysis under variable atmospheres and vacuum.
  • The analysis of LIBS spectra obtained under variable conditions and from diverse astromaterials.
  • The adaptation and use of machine learning algorithms to optimise data calibration and quantitative post-processing of large LIBS imaging datasets.
  • Dissemination of results in peer-reviewed journals and at conferences.
  • Enhancing the group’s recognition by developing scientific and technological cooperation networks and partnerships with industries and institutions.
  • Contributing actively to the development of Research & Technology activities in ESRIC.
