Willowdale High School is a diverse and inclusive learning environment committed to supporting newcomer students and English language learners. Our ESL programs (ESLAO and ESLBO) provide foundational English skills and help students adjust academically and socially to life in Canada.

POSITION SUMMARY:

We are seeking a motivated, compassionate, and dependable Intern – ESL Support Assistant to help support our ESLAO and BO students in the classroom. This is an excellent opportunity for those studying education, TESL/TEFL, or a related field and looking to gain practical, hands-on experience working with English language learners.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a post-secondary program in Education, TESL, ECE, Social Work, or a related field
  • Passionate about supporting English language learners and newcomers
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Punctual, responsible, and able to follow classroom routines
  • Language abilities in Mandarin, Vietnamese, Farsi, or Arabic are a strong asset
  • Previous experience in a classroom or youth-focused setting is a plus but not required
Responsibilities
  • Assist ESL teachers during classroom instruction and activities
  • Provide one-on-one or small group support to ESL students
  • Help with translations and communication, especially for students with limited English proficiency (preferred if candidate can speak Mandarin, Vietnamese, or Farsi)
  • Support students in completing assignments and building vocabulary
  • Help prepare ESL teaching materials and organize class resources
  • Act as a positive role model and mentor for newcomer youth
  • Foster a welcoming and respectful classroom environment
