Universal Rail Solutions Inc. is seeking an Estimating Coordinator to support pre‑construction activities, cost estimating, and bid development for rail and heavy civil construction projects across Ontario. The Opportunity Reporting to the Lead Estimator, the Estimating Coordinator is responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates, quantity takeoffs, and technical evaluations to support bidding, budgeting, and project planning. This role bridges engineering knowledge with commercial awareness, ensuring project proposals are competitive, feasible, and aligned with technical and constructability requirements. You will work closely with Project Managers, designers, procurement teams, and subcontractors throughout the pre‑construction and bidding phases. This role is more than estimating — it’s about building confidence in project decisions before construction begins. What You’ll Do Perform accurate quantity takeoffs for all construction disciplines using drawings, specifications, and pre‑construction documents Prepare detailed cost estimates for materials, labour, equipment, and subcontracted work Analyze drawings and specifications to understand scope, assumptions, and key cost drivers Build and maintain cost databases, historical pricing, and benchmarking tools Identify cost‑saving alternatives and value‑engineering opportunities Review engineering drawings for completeness, constructability, and risk Identify design gaps, risks, and assumptions that may impact project cost or schedule Solicit, review, and evaluate subcontractor and supplier pricing for budgetary and tender estimates Participate in pre‑bid meetings, site visits, and client discussions Prepare bid submissions and ensure all required documentation is complete and accurate Maintain organized estimate files, pricing records, and cost breakdowns Track design changes and update estimates accordingly Participate in bid closings, tender reviews, and estimate presentations Assist with project budget development and cost forecasting What You Bring Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or a related field 1-3 years of experience in estimating or procurement within the rail or heavy civil construction industry Strong understanding of rail construction methods, materials, and equipment Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and estimating software (e.g., B2W or similar) Working knowledge of scheduling tools such as Primavera P6 or MS Project Ability to read and interpret drawings, blueprints, and technical schematics Knowledge of North American railway standards and owners (e.g., AREMA, APTA, TCRP, Transport Canada, Metrolinx, CN, CPKC, VIA Rail) is an asset Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem‑solving skills Clear written and verbal communication skills Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment Experience with cost control, budgeting, and value engineering is an asset Valid driver’s licence, clean driver’s abstract, and willingness to travel to project sites as required Bilingual (English / French) is an asset Work Environment Primarily office‑based with occasional visits to rail construction sites Exposure to outdoor environments, active rail corridors, and construction zones Flexible work schedule aligned with bid deadlines and project demands What We Offer Competitive compensation An industry‑leading benefits program Opportunities for professional growth and development A collaborative team culture where Safety is always the top priority Apply Today!
